Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?

Whenever I start my computer up, it only gets as far as the Welcome screen on Windows, and then re-starts. It does work occasionally, though. I thought it was a problem with the power supply, but changed the power supply and the problem was still there. If anyone knows what this problem is caused by or how to fix it, tell me.Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
It could be many things, from over heating to Spyware infection .. I'd be tempted to hoover out the case especially around the fan that sits over the processor .. maybe even leave the side casing off to allow more air to circulate (only while you test the theory)

Failing that I wouldn't bother with a OS repair in that, if you do have a virus, it will still be there when you have wasted 40 minutes or so reinstalling windows. I would be inclined to wipe the drive ...but... there is probably some good advice to follow from other members, such as downloading spybot or something ..that's if you can keep the machine running long enough ...!

Bon chance !Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?

Run a virus scan... its probably a virus.. otherwise a system file would've got corrupted.. If the anti-virus detects the virus well n good.. Go into safe mode while starting windows.. n press F8 during boot up.. log into admin account.. run a virus scan of C:\.. drive..

If the anti-virus does not rectify it.. then use the OS cd to repair it.. I would suggest 'avast pro' or 'kaspersky' for antivirus Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
I had this problem it was cursed by over heating I fixed by turning it off removing the plug from the wall sockit removing the fans and giving them a good clean I can not say that this will work for you for sure buts its worth a try if it dose not work try reformating and reloading windows Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
its probably not your motherboard because if it was it wouldn't get to the welcome screen either,

if it boots into windows the bit with the mouse and its not DOS then its a registry problem or virus or bug ,

i recommend booting into safe mode then using ccleaner, spybot S%26amp;D and the windows recovery CD (dont format just repair)

if it doesnt boot into windows then its your hard disk, these things wear out over the years and restart randomly and loose data then it gets to a stages that it doesnt even boot or detect it.

so it could be a hd upgrade for you...

if its not any of those, and you are sure its not your hard disk that is broken reformat using windows CD and start fresh

i have seen this caused by a disc being left in the drive from previous use .if this is the case just remove disc %26amp; then start up windowsDoes anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
You have a hard drive error which should be easily fixed by runnng checkdisk.

Can you run the PC in safe mode? or try this on one of the rare occaisions it boots in normal mode.

to use checkdisk simply press the Windows Logo key and R,

type cmd in the line in the window that pops up.

in the new box that pops up you will see something like C:\Documents and Settings\my user name%26gt;

after the last %26gt; you should see the flashing cursor, now type

chkdsk /r /f (note the spaces - these are important)

then press the Enter key

This checks the Hard Disk, the /F fixes errors on the disk the /R locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. If you have more than 1 drive or partition then you should check that as well. When you have finished checking drive C then type chkdsk E: /r /f or what ever the new drive letter name is to check that partition.

It may take several hours to complete if you have a large drive.

If you cant get it to do this in either safe or normal mode then you will have to run this from the Windows CD. Boot from the CD, at the first option select R, when you get the option press 1 to enter the C: drive, type the Admin password (if you don't use one just press enter) and then type chkdsk /r (note the space - it is important). You will note you can not use the /f switch, press Enter and allow it to run, when completed you will get a list of file info including any bad sectors found. Type exit and press Enter and it should reboot. Hopefully it will boot normally.

If it finds any bad sectors consider changing the drive and don't rely on it too heavily until you do. Windows will mark the sectors as bad and not write to them but these errors have a habit of getting bigger.
