Power supply too weak?

Hi, I'm having (actually, I've been having for a while, but didn't care) problems with my PC's power supply unit. I first thought it's the ventilation and that the GPU was overheating. The first game on which I spotted a little slower FPS, (when rendering large structures, for instance) is Hitman Blood Money. I didn't see anything unusual when I was playing Call Of Duty 4 in spring last year. I played HBM in Autumn last year and then I saw it first time, but didn't care actually. Then I started noting the same thing at Call of Duty 5. But on Far Cry, at Very High settings I was having an unbelievable frame rate of 5-6 FPS. My configuration is:

-Intel Pentium D Dual Core 925 CPU, 3.0 GHz, 2脳2 MB Cache

-2048 MB of RAM, 2 脳 Kingston 1 GB

-NVidia GeForce 8400 GS, 512 MB VRAM

-WD HDD, 160 GB

-1脳 DVD-RW

-3 fans

-ASUS P5VD-VM-SE Motherboard

-And the Power supply - 165 W! Yes, that's right, 165 watts.

So now you're probably wondering how may a GPU like that work on a so weak PSU, whilst requiring at least 350-400W. I've always thought that the PSU is the last thing I'll need to change, but now... it's the first thing to change, I guess. So, what do you suggest I do?Power supply too weak?
No, the power supply isn't too weak. It's perfectly fine for driving a weak card like a 8400GS.

The 8400GS is a low, low, low budget card. It has a mere 16 stream processors, compared to 112 in the 8800GT gamer card. THAT is the reason why your games don't run fast, not the PSU.

Of course if you want a better graphics card you will probably need to upgrade the PSU too.

Added new power supply, video card, and monitor.... now computer won't start. Why?

I'm a fairly experienced computer tech, but can't figure this out. I swapped out my old Velocity Micro power supply (it's a VM computer) for a newer model which has the power capabilities needed for a PCI-E video card with PCI-E 6-pin power requirements. At the same time I also installed a PCI-E video card with two 6-pin power connectors and a new HDTV which I'm using as a monitor.

While installing the new power supply, I had to take apart a good portion of the computer, but was careful to get everything back how it looked before. Tested it out after installing the power supply and video card and while all the electrical innards seem to function correctly (fans, lights, etc), I'm not even getting a signal on the new monitor. I tried all 4 DVI ports (between the two cards) and nothing. Then trying to isolate the problem, took out the new card, put the old card back where it was, and no change. That being said, I don't think it's the new video card. Any thoughts on what's going on here? For the record, I was careful about ESD, so while I did do a lot of messing around, I doubt it's that.

Thank you!Added new power supply, video card, and monitor.... now computer won%26039;t start. Why?
Is it plugged in?Added new power supply, video card, and monitor.... now computer won%26039;t start. Why?
Try using a basic monitor to see if that works first. You might have installed something incorrectly or pulled something out of place while messing inIde. Also hdtvs and hd monitors are really hard on your system so be careful with thatAdded new power supply, video card, and monitor.... now computer won%26039;t start. Why?
First thing you need to determine is,

When you first power on the computer, do you get any beeps from the motherboard?

If no beeps, the most likely problem is a bad power supply. New power supplies can be DOA. Don't let LED lights and spinning fans fool you into thinking your power supply is good. A bad power supply rarely fails to a %26quot;do nothing%26quot; mode. Most bad power supplies will still light LEDs and spin fans.

If you DO get beeps (or even a single beep) from your motherboard when you turn the computer on, you need to concentrate on your monitor. Are you using an adapter between the video card and the monitor, such as a DVI-HDMI adapter? That could be part of the problem.

I'd simplify a bit. Put the old power supply and video card back in. See if you can get the computer to boot. If you can, then try the new monitor on the old video card. If that works, swap in the new power supply. If that works, swap in the new video card. Eventually, you'll find a combination that doesn't work with all components known good EXCEPT ONE. Then at least you'll have a better idea of where the problem might be.Added new power supply, video card, and monitor.... now computer won%26039;t start. Why?

How do you change the boot sequence on an windows system when you install a new hard drive ?

I'm asking this for future references in case i have to install a new hard drive in my 2008 model HP Desktop that runs on Windows Vista. It is a old computer modernized by a close friend, he installed a new HP motherboard and the power supply and everything except the Hard Drive and The Optical Drives. Can anyone please help me out ?How do you change the boot sequence on an windows system when you install a new hard drive ?
This is selected in the BIOS settings. When you boot your machine you need to press a button immediately to enter the BIOS and change essential motherboard settings. On HP machines this is typically F1 or F2.How do you change the boot sequence on an windows system when you install a new hard drive ?
Reboot your PC and enter the bios.

Check for an option where you can set the startup sequence.

If you have a new mobo you could check the bios manual. How do you change the boot sequence on an windows system when you install a new hard drive ?
Dear in windows you can't change the boot sequence. Just shut down your computer install the HDD, restart your computer, call BIOS setup and change the boot sequence priority and save the set .

  • Windows XP stuck in reboot cycle after installing a new motherboard and power supply?

K so a bit history first, I had an asus P4S800X motherboard, it did not have a SATA port so to install a new DVD Burner i just bought i had to get a motherboard with a SATA port.

My power supply was also making a lot of noise so i decided to change that as well.

So i found a used intel D865 motherboard along with an intel Pentium4 2.8Ghz processor and i also bought a used power supply. All of them were checked for an hour in the shop and gave no problems.. now when i installed in in my system. this is the configuration I have.

Sata 1 has the DVD Burner, Primary Mater has the hard drive (PATA/IDE), Secondary master and secondary slave have a CD ROM and DVD ROM respectively (both of them PATA/IDE)..

I installed all the cables according to the manual..

now the problem is that windows xp wont load, it is stuck in a reboot cycle, the time it is supposed to show the windows xp logo it just reboots.. i cant even start it up in safe mode.

I also have linux installed as dual boot and the computer can start up fine in linux.. but windows is giving the problem here.

any idea how I can fix this?Windows XP stuck in reboot cycle after installing a new motherboard and power supply?
If you want to save your dual boot HD setup, you may need to tread carefully here. Most linux installations will overwrite the WinXP boot setup and install their own bootloader program (allowing you to select which OS to boot into).

There's no way around it, if you want to get booting back into XP after a motherboard swap, you need to run the XP repair installation process, just be warned Linux may not be directly accessible after XP is done repairing. Windows doesn't %26quot;like%26quot; being a secondary OS, so it'll likely rebuild the MBR such that it, and only it, boots from that HD. It will not mess with your linux partition, though.

You need to find your WindowsXP CD to perform a %26quot;repair installation%26quot;. It sounds extreme, but this will not, in an of itself, wipe out the data you have on your XP boot drive. It'll only modify the underlying XP configuration to run in your new hardware.

If you don't have XP discs, maybe you can find your PC original discs (if this was a brand-name-PC). Here you need to be careful to avoid a full restore. Always pick %26quot;repair XP installation%26quot; option.

This will allow you to boot XP. It also restores all XP hardware drivers with those of the CD-ROM. Once you're back up, run the Windows Update application to receive all the security patches from Microsoft again.

If you're missing your XP discs, then get the phonebook and search for any computer repair shop, ask them for help. Any repair shop should have a XP CD to perform this. Should not cost you much. Let them know about your dual boot setup.

If your linux partition gets whacked, you can gain access to it by booting from a linux live-CD, or installing this driver in Windows: http://www.fs-driver.org/

CheersWindows XP stuck in reboot cycle after installing a new motherboard and power supply?
leave only hdd with system and disk drive connected to start up the pc configuring and saving BIOS.

    one more thing:

if you've changed mother board then windows needs to be reinstalled.

don't know how you want to go about putting system on; have you got installation disk (should be no problem to load windows). if you've just swapped hdd then you'll need to reinstall the sys as well.Windows XP stuck in reboot cycle after installing a new motherboard and power supply?
When you change out a motherboard on an existing Windows install, this is going to happen. You will need to perform a repair install of Windows, which will require a Windows disc. There is no other way to fix then than either perform a repair install, or perform a fresh install of Windows.Windows XP stuck in reboot cycle after installing a new motherboard and power supply?
Yeah any time you do major hardware swap outs your gonna have that problem. just reinstall windows.

or if you want to back up your infomation swap back in your motherboard. Find a usb drive, external hdd. Or internal hdd and back everything up on that.

Or get a new hdd altogether and reinstall windows on new one, And plugin your old hdd, and pull off wuw from that one.

Theres several ways of going about this. those are just a few, more complicated ones

Im afraid you will have to buy a new one, there are a few different types, the most common are ATX and Micro ATX as well as uATX, to me it looks like you need either a micro ATX or uATX (not sure though best to ask your manufacturer). you might want to make sure your video card you want is small enough for that pc aswell because it might not fit depending on the card.

How to change the SSID for Linksys Router?

I have a Linksys Router WRT54G, I unplugged the power supply and completely reset it. The button that you press is orange and not white. I typed 192.168.1.1 into my browsers address bar and typed in: admin, in the username and password, and it comes up 401 Unauthorized. What can I do, I need to change the SSID and secure the network, I know how to do that. How to change the SSID for Linksys Router?
Did you try without using a username? If so then the router password has changed and you may have to do a hard reset to start all over.

You can reset to factory defaults by pressing and holding the %26quot;RESET%26quot; button down for about 30 Seconds, don't just press and release, hold it down! Unit has to be ON for the reset to work.

Then leave the username blank and use admin as the password! How to change the SSID for Linksys Router?
When you have that router, you need to write down the number like:

xxx.xxx.x.xx something like that and type in the number and you can change the SSID and the PASSWORD.

Building a Computer vs Buying A Computer and Upgrading vs Buying Used/Open Boxed Computer?

I am pretty good with computers. I have never however, had to put a whole computer from scratch. I know I am going to need a case. I know there are a lot of different sizes, however I do not know which way to go. I do a lot of A LOT of downloading. I also do a lot of transferring. I download a lot of emails and software’s and such, and I usually have a lot of programs installed. I upload a lot of pictures. I am a photographer in training. I am looking to build a good computer for around 250-400$. It depends on what I am getting for the price changes.

I have reformatted home computers, I have installed cd and dvd drives, and also changed out power supplies. Here is my “hard part” The little indicator plugs that go to the motherboard, like for the power button for example, I am horrible at figuring out where they go. I don’t know if there is an easier way to do it, or if I am just not doing it right, but I have a computer that I turn on by the back button because I can’t figure out where the cable goes on my motherboard.

I need to get a magnify glass to see the small numbers and such and on the motherboard.

I am also looking to have maybe 2 cd/dvd burners installed on my next computer. I have a 1.5tb hard drive external, however when I plug it up it only shows a 1tb of space. So I am wandering where the rest of that space is I am suppose to have?

I am looking for some tips or some sites that have good tutorials. I get a lot of my stuff from new egg.com or COMP-USA.

My current computer is an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+ 2.20ghz , and 1.00gb of ram. I am wondering how well of a computer this is. I got it about a year or 2 ago. It’s just time to update, I hear all about this dual core processor stuff, double even triple ram speed, and everything is going through FireWire now and I really don’t have a clue on the new stuff. I don’t want to order wrong parts and have to send things back if parts are incompatible. Is there any site that helps/shows how to build a site, with purchasing parts and such so no such errors are made?

Please email me at rjm954@yahoo.com thank you everyone for your time.Building a Computer vs Buying A Computer and Upgrading vs Buying Used/Open Boxed Computer?
Generally it cost more to buy all the parts yourself and assemble the computer than it does to have one build for you. The store wants to make a profit off each part, so the price of each is higher than if you buy a whole, pre-made unit. There the store already knows it is going to make a profit, so the markup on a whole PC is less than the mark up on the parts.

However the last PC I build cost me less because I purchased the parts one at a time over about a seven month period. I found a case on sale in january, a hard drive for a steal in february, got a deal on a system board when a new store open in march, etc. And was eventually able to assemble the PC for less than normal. But it takes time and patience.

The people who make and sell PCs for a living buy the parts %26quot;in bulk%26quot; - like 25 system board. That way they get a big break on the price.

Installing the connectors on a new system board is not that hard because it will come with step by step picture instruction. It is a lot easier than trying to figure it out on an already installed board with no instructions.

Finally, the reason you are only seeing 1 tb of your external drive is because the version of Windows you are running is limited to only one tb. You will need to reformat the hard drive and make two partitions on it. The first will need to be smaller than 1 tb so Windows can see that there is more drive beyond where that partition ends. Once you have divided it (say into two 3/4 tb partitions) you will be able to use the whole drive.Building a Computer vs Buying A Computer and Upgrading vs Buying Used/Open Boxed Computer?
Who says buying parts for a computer is more expensive than buying pre-built? I've found parts that run a game like Crysis on High for $1000, in which case a pre-built would cost a little more.Building a Computer vs Buying A Computer and Upgrading vs Buying Used/Open Boxed Computer?
It's like with a car - the total cost of the parts exceed the cost of just buying one. Most computer dealers will allow you to customize your configuration.Building a Computer vs Buying A Computer and Upgrading vs Buying Used/Open Boxed Computer?
First of all I think XP only can see 1TB so thats the problem there.

I would build something new. Its pretty simple. I have confidence you can get it running fine.Building a Computer vs Buying A Computer and Upgrading vs Buying Used/Open Boxed Computer?
If your budget is under $400 you're going to have a real hard time building a computer from scratch. A REALLY hard time. As in, you might not want to bother.

A good mother board will run you $80-150. A case will run you $20-100. A good video card can run hundreds of dollars. And we still don't have a processor...for that you're looking at anywhere from $50-500. Memory can run $100s of dollars as well if you're looking top of the line.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun, and it can save money in the long run (I've been building my own for years) because once you get started you can reuse many of the parts in a computer in your next one (the case, Windows, CD/DVD drives, hard drives, power supply, the monitor). But the initial outlay is rough.

So my advice, if you're just looking for an everyday computer...large companies can build them way cheaper than you can.

For research nothing beats TomsHardware.com for charts on which processor/video card, etc beats whatever.

Computer restarting during some gaming on Windows 7 and a GeForce GTS 250. Could be power supply?

I think I have an issue with my power supply but I have little knowledge of it. I know enough to install hard drives, video cards and even transfer a mother board to another case. I know how to physically replace a power supply but I'm not sure if I gotta change some settings on the BIOS or whatever. The one I have is pretty old and I think it's causing the problems.

Guess the main question is, do you just swap out the power supply with the new one and what do you guys suggest the voltage on it?

I'm running a Pentium Dual Core 2.50 GHZ, 4 GB ram and a 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Can't remember what type of motherboard exactly but I do know it's an ASUS.Computer restarting during some gaming on Windows 7 and a GeForce GTS 250. Could be power supply?
If it only happens during gaming then the most likely culprits are buggy video drivers or a bad power supply. It's almost certainly the latter if you hear the psu cutting out, or the fan speed changing when the reboots occur.

Yes, you'd just disconnect everything from the old psu and swap the new one into place- only takes about 5 minutes with a screwdriver.

For a GTS 250 a 450W psu is recommended, so get at least 500W (or a 450W from Corsair). Anything higher is just allowing room for future upgrades. But there's usually a big price jump above the 500W mark, as many 550-650W units are SLI/Crossfire certified, providing two PCI-E power connectors for video cards. Great if you have dual cards or a single older power-hungry card that requires two connectors- like a GTX 260, Radeon 4870 etc, Radeon 5850 etc.

If your computer is crashing only during game play, i would recommend checking out your drivers are

up to date to start. Look to make sure your power supply can power your video card and computer Accessories.

I would check the fan on your video card make sure that is working, as this card tends to run hot and the fans on this cards tend to go. I have had to swap 2 pny gts 250 1gb ddr3 video cards cause the fan on them kept dying on me.

Finally got tired and just when i got the new card i went and took out the cover from the heat sink on the video card, i took the heat sink out, cleaned it and reapplied artic silver 5 and replace the thermal tape, and reattached the heat sink. Left the cover out with the fan out and instead i used this fan instead,

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Antec+-+Spot

I took this apart and just kept the fan and switch part. this fan sits on the heat sink just fine and instead of having it being power by the graphic card, i hooked it up to my mobo.

This worked for me and stopped my PC from locking up cause my video card kept overheating, now im able to play MW2 with no problems.Computer restarting during some gaming on Windows 7 and a GeForce GTS 250. Could be power supply?
Can u please specify the model of your power supply? Besides having a high wattage power supply, I suggest knowing how much current does your psu drive on ur +12v rail. Google said that gts250 requires a PSU with min 400 watts with a current rating of 30Amp or more on the +12 rail.

If for instance u have a 500 watts PSU with only 22amp then ur system will shutdown or worse case ir PSU or even motherboard will short out. to calculate the current rating on ur +12v. Look at the power at ur PSU table and look at the power under ur +12v1 and or +12v2 and divide it by 12.

    Example, i have a gigabyte superb 550p.

under my +12v1 and +12v2 i have 360 watts of power, the other 190 watts is driven to my power connectors and motherboard power. so....

    360/12 = 30amp

meaning i can juice up any GPU which requires 30amp or less, (my 9800gt requires 26Amp so im good to go) anything above that would hurt ur PSU and even ur pc. Hope it helps.

Computer start up after installing new PSU Need IT advice.?

Long story how it happened , anyway electricity was being shut off for about 10 mins. I told my landlord to wait til I could shut down my computer. I have an HP Emachine 6400. I can not keep this computer running Any IT out there that can shed light? Computer start up after installing new PSU Need IT advice.?
it sounds like you have troubleshooted this problem quite well..

this problem sounds like a cpu heat problem... after the cpu reaches a certain temperature, the computer shuts itself down for precautionary reasons. things you can do -

from a cold start, open up the bios menu and quickly try to find a hardware temperature gauge. after finding this, (should be in advance bios options, or something like that) see what your cpu temperature is at. 45deg is fine, around 50-60 is a bit high, and around 70-90 is dangerously high. so basically, if your cpu is reaching anywhere from 70-90 it will shut down the computer.

the first thing you can try doing, is to see if the cpu fan is properly locked above the cpu.

the thing that you should be worried about is the cpu fan...ive had this problem before and all i had to do is readjust the fan. if this doesn't work then you might look at buying yourself some heat paste.

    good luck

    Replacing the Power Supply

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum

Some power supplies over 700 watts may be longer. That is, go deeper into case. The power supply won't use more watts than the load needs. How do I figure which psu/power supply to buy for computer?
OK, I looked up the specifications for your motherboard. Your motherboard will accept any PCI-Express or PCI-Express 2.0 video card, which is a good thing. Your motherboard requires a 24-pin ATX power connector and a 4-pin ATX CPU power connector. Your new video card will likely require a 6-pin PCI-Express power Connector.

You've found out somehow that your graphics card needs a 300W power supply. This is likely the *minimum* recommended wattage for the power supply. Any good quality brand name 300W power supply would likely work OK. I'm going to suggest you use a 400W or slightly larger power supply, though. The problem with sizing power supplies by total wattage rating is that you don't know how much power will be pulled off of each individual voltage rail. And it's the individual voltage rails that matter. That's why it's a good idea to not use the *minimum* size of power supply.

Keeping that in mind, I'd recommend you go with the following for a power supply replacement:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as

FSP is one of the better quality brands of power supplies. And while you can certainly find a cheaper power supply that will work, you aren't going to spend *significantly* less than 40 bucks unless the power supply you buy is truly junk quality.

    To change the power supply...

    1) Unplug computer from wall outlet (duh)

    2) Follow all cables from power supply to see where they connect. Write this information down somewhere (make a list of all connections, so you won't miss something on reassembly)

    3) Carefully disconnect all power supply cables from motherboard, drives, cooling fans, whatever else the power supply is connected to.

    4) Unscrew the four screws on the back of the computer that hold the old power supply in place. As you are doing this, you might need to support the power supply with your hand (if necessary) to make sure it doesn't fall out and land on something you don't want a power supply to damage.

    5) Carefully extract the old power supply from the case, making sure none of the cables get caught on anything.

    6) (obviously) Mount the new power supply, securing it with the same four screws you removed in step 4.

    7) Referring back to the list you made in step 2, make all necessary connections to motherboard, drives, cooling fans (if necessary), etc.

    8) If you haven't installed your new video card yet, do that while the case is still open. Also, don't forget to hook up the 6-pin PCI-Express power connector from the power supply to your video card, if your new video card needs it.

    9) (obviously) Plug the computer into the wall outlet. If the new power supply has a power switch ON the power supply, make sure that is turned on.

Problems with erratic power supply (fluctuating voltage).?

Hii, For the last one week particularly, I am having problems with erratic power supply. The voltage is average 200 volts but it frequently (at least 10 times a minute) fluctuates to about 190-195 and then back to normal. As a result of this, I am not able to use the computer, which is connected to the UPS, as the UPS relay gets changed frequently to battery and live supply. Any suggestions as to how to overcome this problem?Problems with erratic power supply (fluctuating voltage).?
    Hey there,

UPS is always a good idea, however, it is mostly used when you have a power disconnection not power fluctuations. I strongly recommend a power regulator. you can visit this http://www.national.com/analog/power to find out about the average prices.

It shouldn't be something fancy, you can also calculate the voltage output on the web and the online tool will recommend the required product.

let me know if you need any help in calculating the output voltage of your system.

  • How to maintain a UPS ( Uniform power supply ) ?

I am using zylog ups .. i have changed the battery twice but its still not been working good .. The problem is it is not working in direct mode when the power is on also .. please helpHow to maintain a UPS ( Uniform power supply ) ?
How long have you had it? The batteries need replacing every few years.

If after changing the battery you still have problems, other parts of the unit may of failed.

I'm not familiar with the zylog brand but unless it is a very high end unit, it won't be economical to repair.

To save on the cost of battery replacement including the cost of shipping check with Batteries Plus. They can replace many UPS batteries.

    -------------------------

    Begin UPS soap box....

While most people are aware of the problems surges can cause electronics, not as many are aware of the dangers of low voltage (%26quot;brownout%26quot;) conditions have on delicate equipment. Low voltage conditions can occur when your AC comes on even just a refrigerator cycling. These low voltage dips in voltage cause stress that after time that can lead to early electronic failure. Also loss of power while a computer file is open can cause data loss.

I highly recommend UPSs for computers, TV, entertainment systems and any other electronic computer that you value. I have a least 7 in my home now and buy a replacement every year or two.How to maintain a UPS ( Uniform power supply ) ?
Firstly UPS stands for Uninteruptable Power Supply

Secondly, the only user servicable part is usually the battery so you will most likely need to take it to your local electronics repair shop to have it fixedHow to maintain a UPS ( Uniform power supply ) ?
i guess in ur case it seems like ur UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) is not working right. its not the battery thats causing it.

maybe u should buy a new UPS incase service of the product is not available here.

    Power supply fan not spinning?

I have recently built a computer. I got a power supply that's supposed to detect how hot it is and change the speed at which the fan spins. However, when I turn my PC on it all works but the power supply fan does not spin at all. It's a brand new power supply!

The power supply can be located here...

    Thanks.Power supply fan not spinning?
It probably did not get to the tempature where it turns on.

    Eithor that or its broken.

Call the manufaturer and tell them. They'll probably solve it.

How can i fix my computer from stop restarting during gameplay?

I recently purchased a Gigabyte Nvidia 9800Gt. Ever since then when ever a play a high end game ie assissins creed,cod4 on high setting (1920x1080) it always restarts about 10 mins in game. It works fine for the 1st 10 mins. I can play games fine on low settings as well.

my 1st though was a temperature problem, so i installed 2 fans, prob still occurs.

i also changed my power supply from 350watts to 650 watts, still no luck,

i've also installed the latest nvidia drivers and still no luck.

any suggestions/help?How can i fix my computer from stop restarting during gameplay?
    get a new motherboard.

Also this could occur if the video card overloads and crashes but that's unlikely because its new.

It might also be a software issue causing your computer to automatically shutdown.

Why does my computer randomly shuts down?

    My computer randomly shuts down?

A few weeks ago I was using my computer as usual. Playing Games, Browsing the internet, Checking the status. But now it randomly shuts down without my consent. This is how it happens.

I start up my computer. It runs fine. I run a few programs like Safari, iTunes. Then I close them and play MapleStory. I play for about 23-30 minutes and then it Shuts down. Now I usually have to wait 15-30 minutes again for it to reboot. But, I don't want this to keep happening.

I've researched and this is what I have done so far.

I've cleaned the fans and most of whats inside of my computer.

I've done a virus scan and its clean.

Also I've cleaned my hard drive, and done a system clean up.

I've had a few things in mind.

Changing the Power Supply Unit. Plugging it in a different Source. Upgrading Ram and Graphics Card. Do a system restore again and never download too many programs.

Oh and Early Thank yous for all the answers. Why does my computer randomly shuts down?
I believe it is very likely a power supply problem. Many power supplies will shut down if they overheat. If the fan in the power supply goes out, then it can overheat. How long the computer can run before the power supply overheats depends upon the temperature in the room where the computer is running. The hotter the room, the faster the power supply can overheat. Pay attention to whether the fan runs or not and, if it does, does it stop after a few minutes. If it never stops, the fan is not the issue. However, the power supply just MIGHT still be the problem as an integrated circuit in the power supply might have thermal problems.

Changing the fan in a power supply is not easy, but it is possible. Power supplies, however, are cheap enough that I would just replace it.

You could try calling the Geek Squad at your local Best Buy (if you are in the USA and there is a Best Buy in your area) and describing the problem to them. They might be able to give you an answer on the phone. The more information you give them, the more likely they can help. Be sure to note all unusual noises and the absence of normal sounds.

Good luck! Why does my computer randomly shuts down?
Whats causing your computer to spontaneously shutdown is that your cooling system is not working properly. If that happenes here is what you do.

    1. Check to see if there is dust debris inside the cooling fan. If so used canned air to spray out dust and use a bristle brush to get rid of caked up dust.

    2. If step one does not work, go into your computer CMOS settings(can be acessed by either pressing del, esc, F1, F2 , CTRL-Alt-esc, ctrl-alt-ins, ctrl-alt-enter or ctrl-s on bootup. It usually tells you on the boot screen) and make sure you did not accidentaly set the clock multiplyer up to high. You can fix that by selecting set to optimum settings and then save and exit. If your computer does not have the set to optimum settings feature go to your manual or contact your vender find out the proper clock multiplyer setting in your computer and then set it to that in the softmenu.

    3. If that does not work chances are the berrings in your fan may be worn out and your fan needs to be replaced. If your computer is customized or overclocked, you may need a better cooling system

    World of warcraft PC?

Okay, Tomorrow. I'm going to buy a new PC. This is the specs:

    2.6 Gig processor

    3 Gig of ram

    6150 Nvidia Geforce Se

Now, I notice the graphics card is quiet fail. I'm going to upgrade to an 8800 GT. How hard is it to change the power supplies ? I've had a person tell me that ram runs on the lowest stick. For instance. I've got 3 gig total. If I have a 2 gig stick and a 1 gig stick. He said it will run on one? Bullcrap or not? if you could clear this confusion up I'd appreciate it. ThxWorld of warcraft PC?
First question was about the Graphics card and power supply required to run it. I suggest you pick a power supply that provides more than the current minimum requirements for your system. The best way to do that is to use a power supply calculator. One that’s easy to use is located at Newegg. A general rule of thumb with the 8800’s is Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 22 Amps.

    http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucal…

On the RAM question if you mix RAM sticks with different speed ratings you do force all the RAM to run at the lowest speed. The best performance setup for RAM sticks is called dual channel. It requires that you have “dual channel” RAM sticks in pairs. Most motherboards have the RAM sockets of different colors (lets say white and black). For two matching sticks of dual channel memory the sticks would go in sockets of the same color (both of the white sockets).

If you have single channel ram you can mix the color and put the sticks next to each other.

You have 1 x 2GB and 1 X 1GB non matching sticks so you are forced into single channel mode. Most new motherboards will work with only one stick installed but I’ve seen several motherboards that require memory to be added in pairs only.

I don’t know what “can support up to a 256 mb card” is referring to. Can you supply more details?

    Good LuckWorld of warcraft PC?
2.6GHz processor is telling me a P4 machine.

Unless you are getting this system for $300 you might want to look elsewhere. The system %26quot;should%26quot; play WoW ok, (aside from the video card), so to answer your question it should.

Hard to say for 100% certaintly because I do not know the motherboard model.

As far as the RAM... I only seen Dell do this. Most RAM you need to have two sticks to make it work. He could be stuffing 2x1 GIG sticks, and 2x512 in it. Be cheaper to put 2x2GIG, but I am not the one building it heh.

You can find better made systems for around $700-1500 easy, and will allow you to play current and future games like Age of Conan or Warhammer Online.

    Good luck though.

There is a problem with your preferred location circuit.

It might be with the total power being drawn or with interference from something somewhere, not necessarily in the same building,

When a computer does something like that your only option is stick it into a workshop and let them bench test it over a couple of days.

It's obvious you have got something starting to fail and it will keep getting worse till it does fail completely. Which means you could be messing around with it for weeks.

I've had this happen to me before, and it turns out that I needed a new fan, so try changing the fan, because if your computer keeps turning off continuously then later on it won't let you log on, and all you will get is a blue screen, and you might end up loosing all your data and things, so do it soon!My computer randomly shuts down?

This kept happening to me on a laptop. I was told it was a component on my motherboard and also that my motherboard was dying. I was also told my power supply was on the way out. I opened it up, gave it a good clean out and replaced the heat-sink paste under my processor. This did the trick and it has run perfectly ever since. I use this for game playing only so it works hard. It has not shut down by itself since.

    Windows vista won't start?

i upgraded from xp a long time ago, and i changed the power supply, and the previous was i guess 300 watt or whatever, and now i have 400. how do i know it won't start up? well, the cooler (one of the 2 (or 3?)- not sure which one) is working TOO rapidly, i don't know why - it should work like this very rarely, and just for 1 or 2 secs. now, it works for whatever time, i mean, if u leave the computer to work for 1 minute, the cooler will work for 1 minute, if u leave it 4 24 hours, it will work for 24 hours (didn't try it yet, just guessing) i'm not even sure if it's a hardware problem - yesterday i installed a new antivirus, can it be the reason? anyway, how do i start it up? (if u r interested, i have a old mac) any suggestions will be welcomedWindows vista won%26039;t start?
you mean the fan. That one is okay if it is spinning rapidly.

    Here comes the help:-

    1. Shutdown your PC.

    2. Press F8 before the Windows logo shows up.

    3. Select %26quot;Last Good Configuration%26quot;.

    4. Restart. You should now be able to access Windows again.

Your PC should now be starting fine. Remove the antivirus and install COMODO Internet Security. It is free and more powerful than most, if not all, antivirus suite currently available in the market.

If however that does not work, see below:-

    1. Insert your Windows Installation Disk.

    2. Restart your PC. Make sure you can boot from the CD/DVD.

    3. Let Windows installation loads from the CD/DVD.

    4. Follow instruction until you see an option to repair your computer.

    5. Follow the instructions and let the program run.

When it finishes you should be able to start your windows again.

Once that happens remove the the antivirus and install the COMODO Internet Security. Please make sure to choose %26quot;Scan My Computer%26quot; when asked.Windows vista won%26039;t start?

not realyl sure what your saying since your words are quite jumbled around.... but... seems like your computer is overheating a lot, and it may not be starting up because there is a malfunction in the motherboardWindows vista won%26039;t start?
    Gggg.. Ack.. Erp...

If I catch your drift, your computer doesn't go, but one of the cooling fans is working overtime.

What you need to do is install or re-install the Vista chipset drivers for your motherboard if such a thing exists. If the fan is freaking out and it is not an always on fan, then the software controller is borked, Unless this is a chip fan, in which case it all gets summed up quite neatly by a bad processor. A fried CPU can get hot, and I mean HOT, so the fan may be doing its thing.

Does the machine work at all? Can you boot to safe mode and ax the AV? Is this Norton 360 by any chance? I just had a NASTY encounter with that on a vista box. If it works at all, then the processor is okay. If you can get to safe mode try stopping the AV processes in msconfig for startup, and reboot.

    ******

Okay, download a puppy linux live CD from here:

    http://puppylinux.org

stick that in the drive and boot your machine. You don;t care about puppy linux, but you DO care that it fires up your box, thus telling you that the RAM chips, and Processor are okay. If puppy fires up your machine, you have a bad boot sector on your hard drive. If puppy does NOT fie up the box, your processor has gone the way of all things.

How to swap hard drives between 2 computers (Both are XPs)?

One computer, a Compaq, isn't able to turn on. I don't know why this is, but I guess power isn't able to get to it. My other computer, an HP, is able to turn on, but after I completely wiped the hard drive, I can only get past the first few menus, then the screen goes blank. I have left it on for several days like this but nothing's changed.

The power supply is probably broken in 1, and the hard drive is messed up in the other.

Does anyone have any links or ways to swap the hard drives from the Compaq to the HP?

I thought about swapping the graphics cards, but the non-working one is using an AGP slot and the working one is using a PCI slot and has no AGP slot.

I'm only 15, so basic instructions would be a lot better. How to swap hard drives between 2 computers (Both are XPs)?
There is one thing you forgot to clarify: is your Hard Drive and IDE or SATA type? IDE are the ones with large/broad data connectors that use a 4-pin Molex cable from you Power Supply, and SATA HDD are those that have those much smaller flat data-connectors and power

    connectors.

Anyways, I have included these 2 videos below to show you how to install the HDD on your PC.

For the SATA HDD, you just have to make sure that your the data cable for the SATA HDD that will be your primary drive (to boot windows) is connected to the lowest numbered SATA port on your motherboard (e.g. SATA 0).

If your HDD is IDE, then, as mentioned in the video, you have to place the jumper on MASTER to enable that drive to be your primary boot drive to boot to Windows XP.

If one of the drives is SATA and the other IDE, always select SLAVE on the IDE drive. Your BIOS and Windows will autodetect the SATA HDD as the primary.

How can I fix my 9800 gx2 computer to play Left 4 Dead without crashing every 15 minutes?

My rig is an I7 965 processor

    asus rampage 2

    nvidia 9800 gx2 (latest drivers)

    windows xp

    abs tagan 1300 watt ps

and 6 gb of corsair ddr3 1866 mhz ram

I shouldn't have problems with this set up running Left 4 Dead but it always crashes or blue screens 15 minutes into game Play. I wonder if I should downgrade to a 9800 gtx, or if I should be changing my power supply?

I just think how can I not get enough power running a 1300 watt. It's impossible! Maybe the power isn't continuous or stable enough?

I also had a BFG 9800 gx2 which blew out in the process of trying to set it up to quad sli. now reduced down to a single EVGA 9800 gx2.

Also when I try to run Dawn of war 2, my computer basically crashes every 15 minutes while running in multi gpu mode.

When running in single GPU mode, everything seems to be a bit more stable.

I haven't tried to run Left 4 Dead in single GPU mode which I will try tonight.

Anyone that could be gracious enough to help me, you'll be helping a year long problem I've been dealing with.

I previously had an Nvidia 8600 GTS in my old old rig, and I was able to run Left 4 Dead all day. why is the 9800 gx2 so unstable?!

Which also makes me wonder is the GTX 295 any different? How can I fix my 9800 gx2 computer to play Left 4 Dead without crashing every 15 minutes?
I don't think it's the gx2. it could be over heating, whihc is a flaw of the card, I know because I have two also. I had to water cool mine adn now I have no issues. make sure the fan os turned all the way up. download rivatuner to do this. the fan really should be set to %80 or higher or else the temps will hover at 85-100c.

Now I think you have your cpu overclocked. Am I right? make sure it has enough voltage. the gx2 won't bsod your computer, however an overlcocked 965 wihtout porper colling and voltage will.

So think about getting a watercooling setup for your gx2 if oyu don't want the fan noise, and make sure that the air flow is not influanced by blocked cables or poor fan placement.

Also for the 965 ensure the voltage will help overlcok and keap an eye on the temps. a stable overclock will not bsod in a game a bad one will.

Hope this helpsHow can I fix my 9800 gx2 computer to play Left 4 Dead without crashing every 15 minutes?
Have you installed the appropriate drivers? I know jack nothing about SLI and dual video cards so I can't help much there but improper drivers can crash the system real fast. You also may have a RAM problem. I would test out some different sticks and see if it still blue screens.

From there, let us know what happens. How can I fix my 9800 gx2 computer to play Left 4 Dead without crashing every 15 minutes?

I think my computer is passing to the other side

I am, what you can call, a Zen type of person. The kind that doesn’t slap door shut or screams at the guy who just crashed into my car because he though he would look cool driving as if he is in bumper cars. However, recently I have had their overwhelming feeling to get a tennis bat and slap the hell out of my computer.

I have never been an electronics wiz but I can get by, but my computer is setting records in frustrating others. Imagine that; I have to open it in a sequence and if I screw up the sequence it will act like a hormonal teenager. After I manage to open it , usually takes 15 min, I have to start saying my prayer or it will suddenly shut down, yes I mean shut down as if I unplugged the electricity. I have changed the power supply about 4 times and the hard and the mother board …nothing works. Well lets go with the best case scenario, the computer s working fine now, I have to wait for 15 min for my computer to open but I am a patient person, and manually type all the file extensions or else it wont work but I am tolerant person. OPPS the computer froze just before I open what I needed to open. Oh no oh no what did I do wrong now, I have any anti virus, firewall, anti spy ware, and damn it I used the sequence! This is my life for 4 years now. My computer has changed the sexual orientation of some people I meant it. You probably don’t believe me so I will tell you a story; a year and a half ago I hired this guy to fix my computer and left him in the room, a few min later i enter the room and caught him “telling” please work I will kiss you if you work! He just turned to a pansexual (if you don’t know what it is, try google bec it’s not what you think don’t be a creep).

I am a windows kind of person, and this bites! Since , as you all know, they crash a lot. But I have a few reasons for not switching to Mac; 1) very expensive in my country bec very low supply 2) no one here knows anything about it. I am serious; in one of my college laps they used a Mac and I spent the 1st month not knowing how to right click! And now one knew.

Now I have told you about my struggle with my computer and now it is only appropriate to tell you the rest of my struggles. My AC is down. I called the company and they said they can come after 30 (then it will be winter). I wouldn’t have minded them coming after 900 years if I lived in Russia or Antarctica but I freakin leave in Egypt in North Africa. I am melting here!! Long story short called a free lancer who conned me and my Ac still doesn’t work to that day. My lap top and my mobile stopped working but finally I fixed them.

Electronics should have made my life easier, however I think it is safe to say they have compiled me to go to anger management classes and gave me suicidal thoughts. I think I will give up on my computer and try living natural for a while. Naaa who am I kidding, living without facebook , my space, MSN, and publishing blogs! I must be delirious. To conclude, may be it’s my luck with electronics (I am cursed), may be I am stupid, and may be the things just suck. Probably it is a mix of the three.

What do u think of this op-ed/ blog?
okayy number 1...calm down. its alrigth. and number 2..seriously!?!?!?! you have suicidle thoughts because of a computer? thats really bad. have you tryed a quack?(therapist) ahaa. get a new computer all together. everything. just throw the one you have now out. stick to your library computers for awhile then when u have saved enough money, buy a new one. there are ways to take the pictures you have saved on that one and send iit to your new one. all you need is its memory. now please take this to thought, and stop thinking about anger and suicide. best of luck,

My Desktop Computer won't turn on?

My desktop computer won't turn on and I desperately need to use its floppy drive. I don't have any other computers I could put the floppy drive in (unless you count my laptop, which it wouldn't fit in as far as I could tell).

Here's what happened: I was using my desktop computer and then it suddenly turned off. It didn't say that it was shutting down, the screen just went black and it won't turn on. When I try to turn it on nothing happens, nothing at all.

The power light on the front doesn't light up. I tried changing the power supply, that didn't work. I took the whole computer apart and the motherboard light (green LED) is on. All of the wires are working and properly connected, I removed every cable and put them back in. I took the processor fan off and cleaned it (it was very dusty). Behind the fan was some metal around the edges it was dusty but it was free from dust closer to the centre.

I noticed that whenever I turn off the power supply and wait for the motherboard light to turn out, the processor's fan will turn a little bit.

What could be wrong with it? If there is more than one thing that could be wrong with it, how could I tell which one it is? I don't have another desktop computer to test the parts in. Is there anyway I could fix the desktop? My Desktop Computer won%26039;t turn on?
Sounds like it is bricked. If you were installing updates or using the regristry and there was a power loss to your computer, it may have been bricked. Bricked is when a gadget is working but doesn't turn on. I hope you have warrenty because thats the only thing you can do.

    Computer won't boot up?

Recently my computer has been unable to turn on. So I changed the power supply and now the computer has power and starts to boot. But then I receive a message saying %26quot;reboot and select proper boot device

or insert boot media in selected boot device%26quot; what does this mean and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?Computer won%26039;t boot up?
A little random, but try just resetting the device either by CTRL+ALT+DELETE when you get that message, or the next step would be to check the computers boot priorities..

Some preconfigured computers come with a boot menu (e.g. pushing F2 or F12 at boot) You'll definitely be able to access it somewhere.. Hopefully your hard drive will be displayed in that boot list..

If it's not then check connections into your hard drive (if you have the ability to without voiding warranties etc.) or consult a technician or another forum on how to reset your Bios.. each machine is slightly different when it comes to that so it would be to general to recommend that now.

The final idea I have is the most unfortunate.. It may be that your hard drive has failed and that the computer can't see it.. If this is the case then you could try removing the hard drive and replacing it with a new.. installing Windows to that if you can and see if it resolves the issue and then maybe try your old hard disk in a caddy to retrieve any data.. but realistically, if the hard drive has failed.. I doubt you'll be able to get anything from it.

I wish you the best of luck!Computer won%26039;t boot up?

How does one prove damage caused by the power company?

As an addition to two of my other questions that are currently predominating my spare time,if the power company has problems with the people they are contracting power from on the high side supply transformer and are changing fuses (to which they admit when my father called), switching the power on and off for the entire region, and a person -my father- witnesses the result (the tower jumping, crackling and sparking) and then calls to inquire and it is verified that they are doing maintenance at the substation, can the power company be held liable for damages to the computer (motherboard, processor, power supply, hard drive and supplies used to recover data)? The power co.'s liability department/HR person wrote a letter stating that this had occurred, but that they are not responsible for the %26quot;act of god%26quot; caveat or other variations (pretty much anything). You should contact a local electrician who can examine any damaged wiring or appliances and serve as an expert, and, further, assuming the electrician's analysis is the same as yours, explore suing the electric company. For that, you should consult a local attorney. How does one prove damage caused by the power company?
    Three steps.

First, you need to prove that damage occurred. That's a matter of being able to demonstrate objective harm/loss.

Second, you need to prove causality -- the harm was the result of (was caused by) something the power company did or did not do.

Third, you need to prove either that the power company acted intentionally to cause that harm, or acted negligently by failing to do something that it should have to avoid the harm. How does one prove damage caused by the power company?
it's hard to prove it.......any outsider cabn look at this and will point the finger at the power company....but to go after them for damages you will need hard proof....like if you have that conversation taped where they say they were conducting maintenance

    Dell dimension e521 gaming?

i was wondering how much money i have to spend to get this computer to run cod 4 (call of duty 4). for example which kind of graphics card would best suit it. and im looking for something that aint worth to much money. ive heard things about changing the power supply and i dont want to do that but if will if thats my only last resortDell dimension e521 gaming?
The best video cards you could install without upgrading the power supply are the GeForce 9600GT or Radeon 4670, which are good for most games. If you want something more powerful like the Geforce 9800GT/GTX, Radeon 4850/4870 etc- then you'll need to upgrade the psu.

Why do the substitution effect and the income effect in labour supply?

This is the infomation I've got:

    Substitution effects

As the price of a good falls, the consumer substitutes that good in place of other goods whose prices have not changed

Substitution effect of a price change arises from a change in the relative price of a good

And it always moves quantity demanded in the opposite direction to the price change

When price decreases (increases), substitution effect works to increase (decrease) quantity demanded

    The Income Effect

A price cut gives consumer a gift, which is rather like an increase in income

    Income effect

As price of a good decreases, the consumer檚 purchasing power increases, causing a change in quantity demanded for the good

Income effect of a price change arises from a change in purchasing power over both goods

Income effect can work to either increase or decrease the quantity of a good demanded, depending on whether the good is normal or inferior

But I don't know HOW to answer the question.

ThanksWhy do the substitution effect and the income effect in labour supply?
Labor is just another %26quot;good%26quot;. If cheaper labor becomes available, it is demanded at the expense of labor that has remained the same price.

If cheaper labor becomes available, coporation can make higher profits. This effectively gives them increased puchasing power for more labor. If the corporation decides that there are advantages to be had by using the extra purchasing power to buy the more expensive labor (perhaps there are dimishing returns from employing more of a less educated workforce) then they may opt to go for the %26quot;norma%26quot; rather than the %26quot;inferior%26quot; workforce.

    Uncommon HardDisk problem?

Hi, I have a problem that seems very uncommon. Firstly my desktop power supply is broken because of 'something' that later I found out to be the harddisk. Every time I try to connect the harddisk to the power supply, the power supply is burnt. I already changed 2 power supply right now and basically I already detach my harddisk.

I'm trying to access all my data inside by using external harddisk casing, but I can't because there is no power. I'm trying to ask a computer technician, he said my harddisk is having a short circuit or something like that. Inside is my whole data with my important files.

Anyone know how to get my data back?

I'm currently working on a computer. The issue was that the PC would turn on sometimes, and shut on and off by itself, so I changed the power supply. Problem solved. Now, the monitor will power on, but no display and the light near the power on button stays orange. I turn the monitor on and off, no luck.

I had an extra video card in my other computer that works, so I took it out, added it to the computer I'm working on, and it still doesnt work. The monitor works fine on my other computer, as I'm using it right now. Could this be a motherboard issue? How can I test this?Computer Monitor powers on, but no display?
I think it definitely could be motherboard, I am guessing there is no beep codes or anything? It sounds like it isn't even doing POST. I just had a thought though I have had this problem when I changed a power supply in the past. Check the voltage switch on the back of the power supply make sure it is at 120.

Do a search online for Dell laptop repair. I have used several and found them faster, cheaper and just as reliable. They use mostly Dell parts. Make sure you shop around and se how long they have been in business etc,

Not sure about upgrading graphics %26quot;card%26quot; since I think it is built into the motherboard. Power supply is external but you would send it with the laptop anyway and they could check it for you. Hard to tell if it is bad since the mother board is toast. Might be cheaper to buy replacement on eBay if needed.I have a dell inspiron 9400 (Vista) laptop.Motherboard dead. Do i go with dell or replace independently? How?
I hope you're sitting down when they get back to you. If the mainboard's gone, the laptop is scrap - buy a new one. It will not be economical to repair or replace a Dell board, as only Dell will sell you a new one.

The only thing you could do is find a computer repair place that have a working used mainboard to swap.

    The graphics aren't upgradeable.

Dell stuff isn't the best, so there's no guarantee that you won't have the same problem again with a new board.

    Good luck

Did I blow out my computer power supply ??

looks bad here... turned on my computer and heard a loud CRACK like a spark! Investigated and some water had leaked onto/into the computer. Bad... Dried it out and now no response.

Maybe I just blew the power supply (I hope!) and other parts are okay, but here's how I made things worse... I already started checking connections inside and now I'm not sure where to plug in all those little wires if I try to put in a new power supply. Where can I find a guide to this? Do power supplies have a fuse I can change to see if that fixes it? And lastly, it is possible my 110-220 switch got switched, so which do I set it to?

I'd appreciate answers to any part of this question or if anyone can point me toward good online tutorials for fixing this! (googling didn't find what i'm looking for)Did I blow out my computer power supply ??
well if the power supply is gone, you may have to replace it , did the water only get into the power supply , or all over inside the computer case ?? some power supplys have a fuse that can be replaced , but more often its time to buy a new one , as for the plug ins, they are pretty straight forward to plug into the componants, just draw a diagram , of where everything goes too .. like cd roms, and dvd roms , have a 4 prong plug that will only go in one way into the device, so its fail safe , this also goes for hard drives as well . if you have a floppy drive that takes a littler 4 prong plug , that will also go in one way with tabs(mostly white ones) go with tabs bottom side down (tabs on bottom) . the plugs that go into your mother board are also one way plugs , and fit only one way ... i would count the number of used plugs comming out of the back of the power supply , and make sure that you get a replacement that has the same amount of plug ins as you need... also i would get one that is a little bigger wattage wise to keep the computers power supply cooler, and additional power to run more add-ons if you need too ...make sure that you take the old supply with you to the store , and ask for a slightly bigger (wattage wise) power supply.Did I blow out my computer power supply ??

Hi, same thing happened to me a few months ago, definately sounds like your PSU, do not turn your computer back on as there is a risk of damaging other components.

As far as fuses, i dont think their is any in the PSU you need to buy a new one, and the 110 or 220 depends on your power source most will be 110.

Its pretty easy to hook up a new PSU, one thing you might check is if your mobo has a 20 pin or 24 pin connector. Since it blew I would advise getting a higher wattage on your new one

Good luckDid I blow out my computer power supply ??
OK a power supply is very easy to change. There should be one big plug which goes into an obvious spot on the motherboard. On newer computers , There is an addition square plug , that powers the CPU. The rest of the plugs are for the hardware like the DVD/CD drives, hard drive(s) and floppy, the smallest plug. It does not really matter which goes where , they're all the same exact voltage.Did I blow out my computer power supply ??

  • How can I direct the electric output of windmill to the AC power?

Is it even possible? Here is the scenario:

I create a windmill, it generates some DC output. I filter it, zener it, and I got a stable DC source under good wind conditions. Now can I use it to supplement the AC power supply of my house? so that I can use the extra power without making any changes to the wiring of my house. How can I direct the electric output of windmill to the AC power?
Yes, it is possible by using an %26quot;inverter%26quot;. But I think it is not appropriate to use that generated AC voltage to power your stuffs. It is not efficient because you also need other equipments like transformer to step the voltage up. You must also design the appropriate switching and control circuits. Directing its output I think is not possible. How can I direct the electric output of windmill to the AC power?
Tesla or Edison you decide. How can I direct the electric output of windmill to the AC power?
You need what is called an inverter to convert the DC to AC. Since wind speed fluctuates, it would be best if you used the DC to charge batteries, and then run the inverter off of the batteries.

Inverters that hook into the power supply of your house are expensive, so if you have a small windmill, it is more economical to simply devote part of your AC loads to the wind system through separate wiring (or a transfer switch).

DKHow can I direct the electric output of windmill to the AC power?
A local has some solar panels which do pretty much what you're planning. Jerry runs the DC (somehow) into a pile of lead acid batteries then uses a DC-to-AC %26quot;inverter%26quot; to output 110vac. I _think_ he has rewired his houses connection to the power company such that he throws a big switch when he wants to run off the energy accumulated in his batteries.

Whatever he uses for DC-to-AC seems to be electrically noisy, suggesting it's making 60 hz square waves with sharp edges. I say this because I could hear his wife complain of %26quot;snow%26quot; on her TV set. Get out your filters.

I asked a solar power company to give me a quotation on solar panels for our house. Their plan included a couple thousand dollar %26quot;inverter%26quot; which allowed the whole thing to pump AC back into the grid. So, a smoother way than Jerry's exists and I imagine the street price of an inverter is much less than what that company was going to charge me.

The batteries may seem an inefficient stage (10% losses) but it lets you accumulate energy at a wind (or sun) condition which would otherwise be too weak to power the house. How can I direct the electric output of windmill to the AC power?
    in shorts: no, you can't.

    first:

for making an ac power supply you'd better use induction or synchronous generators, cause using a DC generator and then converting it to ac is very expensive (you will need an inverter)

If you have created stable DC I suggest you to find an appliance that can you DC directly.

Even if you create ac power, parallelizing it with distribution network is really hard (they must be synchronous and there are many protection issues)

    so forget about it!

Yeah, you need a slim-line PCI-e card. The best you'll get is a 9600GT, and Newegg carries it. Also, I think you only have a 180 watt power supply, so upgrade that for sure. Buy the best Seasonic you can if it's mATX, and if ATX look at things like OCZ StealthXStream, Earthwatts and PCP%26amp;C- all usually heavily discounted at Newegg. You may need extra cooling, too- if the card gets hot, dremel a cut out in the rear of the case and add a fan! Seriously.

You have enough watts in your PSU, so u don't need to change it. I would get at least a 512 mb graphic card with GDDR3 memory. And to answer your other question, no I don't know any program that calculates your wattage, sorry. Hope i helped.I have 400 watt PSU in my cpu..?

thanks in advance :)How do I know which graphics card works on my computer to play the latest games?
sorry, but HP computers have a reputation for using tiny power supplies. (I should know since my computer is an HP, though upgraded.) Your power supply is most likely 300-350 watts, which is not adequate.

Sorry, but if you can just set your budget up $50 so you can pay $200, you can get a 400-500 watt power supply and a $150 graphics card.

Buy a $50 ATX power supply, making sure you have more than 22 amps on the 12 volt rail(s) ((It will say on the sticker on the side)

Then buy a $150 graphics card like this one:

Just open up your case (most computers today have a panel designed to open on the side, try to figure out a way to slide it open, unscrew it if you have to) your power supply stats should be in a sticker pasted on the power supply.

How can I fix a zapped external hard disk?

I recently plugged a 110v external hard disk from Japan into a 220v socket here in Argentina. There was a zap, sparks flew, and of course the hard disk wouldn't turn on any more. However, I get the feeling that if I change the power supply circuitry, I might be able to still use the hard disk, which can be unplugged from the rest of the circuitry inside the hard disk case. 驴Do you think I'll be able to fix and use the hard disk or at least recuperate the data inside it? I'd appreciate any experiences or background information that may help me get this problem fixed. Thanks in advance. How can I fix a zapped external hard disk?
Wow, the best thing I can tell you is to get the correct voltage settings and try it again. The problem with computers is that they are magnetically vulnerable. A surge like that typically (fries, erases, deletes, shorts circuits) renders the component useless, because the circuits are screwed. All you can do is hook it up to another computer, using the correct voltage settings and hope for the best.

There are professionals that may be able to retrieve data from a crippled hard drive. This is a very expensive process, so only consider if the dat is that darn important.

    Good luck.

  • Old parts new computer?

I broke my computer when trying to add ram (would like to try fix it, but that's another question). I purchased a new e machine for $299 and im not sure if this is just a cheep product, but the cables and ide controls on the on the mother board are like nothing i have ever seen before.

They are smaller, and the power ports are different, They are not standard ribon cables that i am used to. it has been quite some time since i have purchased a new pc, (2005) but i did not think happed.

Is this just something e machinces has done so that i can not expand. i wanted to use my hard drive and DVD burner, but they cant match.

I could change my power supply but how do i connect them to my mother board. Old parts new computer?
It sounds like your motherboard only supports SATA drives. If so, you'll have to add an IDE controller to use your old hard drive.

Can You Help? I Need Some Expert Advice.?

I'm Planning some upgrades to this decktop.

The upgrades are: 1. I want to install a video capture card %26amp; internal modem card for a broadband connection, But as there is only 3 internal slots %26amp; 1 is obstructed by the already installed graphics card. Q. Is it possible to change the position of the graphics card [ to another slot ]without causing major headaches?

And if so do all the drivers need to be reinstalled or will the computer simply act the same as when you change a devices USB port?

    2. I want to add an extra internal hard drive [ as the external hd is filling fast %26amp; the internal is already near full ] as a slave drive. Q. Will I need to change my power supply %26amp; if so how do you work out what size is needed, also is there any special drivers needed to run the additional hard drive as a slave drive, am I restricted to the size of the additional hard drive by the size of the existing hard drive?

Hopefully there is someone out there who can answer these questions or at least point me in the direction of someone who can.

Or a website with the answers will do.Can You Help? I Need Some Expert Advice.?
Well, the best idea is to get an EXTERNAL broadband modem from your service provider (like COMCAST or VERIZON, for example). That way, you don't need to switch things around internally.

To answer the question a different way...your motherboard must be SLI or Crossfire in order to have two or more X16 PCIe ports. Most of the time, a single X16 motherboard will also have a second X4 PCIe port. So if your motherboard is not SLI or Crossfire enabed, you probaby have a X4 slot which you could switch your graphics card to, but the fact is, it will work at 1/4 of it's current speed! This is why I suggested the first suggestion - get an external modem. All you have to do then is to use your motherboards NIC connector (like gigabit, for example), run a CAT4 NIC connector from the motherboard NIC to the external modem. It's that simple. Then, you don't need to mess with your PCIe slot(s) or PCI slots.

Secondly, hard disks take up very little wattage...somewhere between 5 - 10 watts per hard disk. So I seriouslly doubt you will need a new power supply just for that alone. You may need one if you have a very small psu and your video capture card pulls some heavy duty watts. I don't know what watts video capture cards pull. So check that out.

You will not need to %26quot;slave%26quot; or %26quot;master%26quot; the hard disk if you have SATA ports on the motherboard. SATA is single channel and does not have dual master/slave like IDE does.

There are no special drivers needed for IDE drives, but you will need your SATA drivers if you intend to use SATA drives. If you already have a SATA drive installed, that means you already have a SATA driver. If your computer is one of those whith both an IDE port(s) and SATA ports, then leave your IDE settings as they are, and buy a SATA drive and use an avaiable SATA port. You can either download the SATA driver for your motherboard from the manufacturer of the motherboard or you can download a SATA driver from the hard disk manufacturer. Check it out before you buy. You will need to confirm if you have a SATA port(s), and where to get the drivers for SATA for your motherboard or computer. If IDE, then you will not need any special drivers, they are already part of Windows.

You are restricted to size of hard disk, in XP, BEFORE SP1, you could not access more than 133 Gigs. AFTER SP1, it became 3 Teribytes. I don't know what W2k, ME or 98 are limited to but I do remember running 120 Gig disks under W2K. I think under ME and 98, you are limited to 33 Gigs Max.Can You Help? I Need Some Expert Advice.?
Answer 1) You motherboard only has 1 PCI express x 16 slot so the graphics card must remain where it is.

Answer 2) Adding an additional hard drive is easy. If your computer has an extra power plug for another hard drive then no new power supply will be required. There are things called jumpers in the back of some hard drives and the instructions provided with the new hard drive will give you directions on how to set it for slave. No new drivers need be installed, but hard drives do come with a cd for easy formatting and setup of the new drive. They are very user friendly if you just follow the steps provided. You can also opt to buy a new hard drive and a

I am shocked that there are newer motherboards out there that have ethernet ports, but lack onboard modems. For broadband you don't need an internal modem though. If you're getting DSL then you will be provided a modem by the service provider. If you're getting cable internet you can purchase a cable modem from Newegg.com, Best Buy, Walmart, and possibly even the service provider. The reason you won't need an internal modem is because the phone line connects to your external broadband modem and that modem is connected to your computer via either ethernet cable or usb cable. If you still want a dialup modem you can get an external usb modem from Newegg.com leaving your extra PCI slot free for your video capture card. There are also video capture devices that connect through usb. Below are a few links of product examples. I have not used these products so am not endorsing them. Hope you find this helpful. Can You Help? I Need Some Expert Advice.?
Sure, you can probably move the graphics card. I've done it several times. You may need new drivers but I doubt it. The hard drive should be fine. You should have all of your old space and the additional space of the new hard drive. Just make sure the pins in the back are set correctly for slave.
