Building my own pc for the first time?

i have the sneaking suspicion that dell is trying to rip me off, i have limited pc building knowledge, ive done the following (change power supply, change graphics card, add hard drive, add ram and a few other motherboard cards) i dont know how much more complicated building a computer could be however im looking at building my own pc that consists of

an enclosure that will help ventilate the parts because i dont wanna buy a cooling system

motherboard with 3 pci 2.0 slots

intel i7 between 2 and 3ghtz

6gb ram

750 or better power supply

graphics cards right now im between dual 9800gtx dual 285 or mabye 1 295 depending which is better

regular cd drive, mabye blu ray drive if cheap

some type of media reader

i built this on dell.com as the xps 730 or something and with the card as a dual 285 it came out to be about $3,000. i dont know if i could get that cheaper. oh and it came with some type of copper cooling peice for the processorBuilding my own pc for the first time?
You could absolutely build it cheaper than the Dell. A note about the i7's, they are smokin' fast but if you wait six months the price will probably drop to about half, same goes for the i7 mainboards.

Build it on TigerDirect or Newegg. I bet you'll find that you'll save $1000 by scratch building it.
