I Need Some Expert Advice.?

I'm planning to do or have some upgrades done to this desktop.

The upgrades are: 1. I want to install a video capture card %26amp; internal modem card for a broadband connection, But as there is only 3 internal slots %26amp; 1 is obstructed by the already installed graphics card. Q. Is it possible to change the position of the graphics card [ to another slot ]without causing major headaches?

And if so do all the drivers need to be reinstalled or will the computer simply act the same as when you change a devices USB port?

2. I want to add an extra internal hard drive [ as the external hd is filling fast %26amp; the internal is already near full ] as a slave drive. Q. Will I need to change my power supply %26amp; if so how do you work out what size is needed, also is there any special drivers needed to run the additional hard drive as a slave drive, am I restricted to the size of the additional hard drive by the size of the existing hard drive?

Well I hope there is some one out there who can either answer the queries I have or point me towards someone / website that can.I Need Some Expert Advice.?
If the other slots are the same then you can move the video card, it shouldn't matter or need anything reinstalled. As for the new internal drive chances are you don't need a new power supply and yes you can get a drive bigger then your existing one.I Need Some Expert Advice.?
Dunno! Even experts cant help you without makes and model numbersI Need Some Expert Advice.?
If you do not have enough slots, buy a new motherboard.

Without enough information, eg, make of the desktop etc

you get limited advice.I Need Some Expert Advice.?
1) Maybe. It depends on the card and the motherboard. For the last few years, usually graphics cards have gone into a special slot designed to optimize video performance (PCI-E or AGP before that); you wouldn't be able to fit such a card into a standard PCI slot. Look at the slots on the motherboard to see what you have.

2) In most reasonably well-designed computers, you shouldn't need to upgrade your power supply just to add one peripheral. If you want to double check (or if you've previously added other internal components) you could note the power requirements of the major components and add them together, then compare to what the power supply is rated for; if under the wattage given by the power supply, you're golden. If over, get a new supply ASAP. If close, might be a good idea to get a new one to be on the safe side, anyway.

As for the drive, it depends on the age of the machine and what connectors your motherboard has. Generally you set it to master/slave using jumpers on the drives themselves; you may also need to swap placement on the cables connecting them to the motherboard. Instructions for your new drive would come with the drive, though you may need to look up the manufacturer's website for the other drive for assistance with that one, if it's not clear from the unit itself. Size is not dependent on the first drive.I Need Some Expert Advice.?
1. Not likely, unless you're using a PCI video card. If it's AGP or PCI-Express, then there's no chance of it.

You do need new drivers, but the cards will likely come with the required drivers (unless you're running Vista, windows 7 or some other newer system)

2. You likely won't need a new PSU because the load of an external HD is VERY minimal. No you don't need additional drivers, it'll just use the default USB drivers. And no, your external drive can be whatever size. I recommend 500GB to 1TB.

Trying to make my computer better, give me some opinions?

Hi I bought my computer a couple of months ago and so far I am happy with it(not extremely happy, but %26quot;ok%26quot; happy) so I want to make my computer a lot better, I want to use its full capacity, so can you guys give me some opinions on how to make it better?

-this is the computer I have:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113059

-I've already installed a 9800gt graphic card and a wireless PCI adapter

-I am going to change its power supply with this one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817255010 - is that a good power supply for my pc, and is it going to %26quot;fit%26quot;?

-Do you guys have any more opinions to make my pc better? thanks for you help anyways =DTrying to make my computer better, give me some opinions?
Power Requirements:

9800 GT models

Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.

(Minimum +12 Volt current rating of 26 amps)

An available 6-pin PCI Express power dongles

There is no 6-pin PCI Express line from that power supply. I would buy a better power supply.Trying to make my computer better, give me some opinions?
If you're running Windows Vista, A way to speed it up would be to run MSCONFIG from the RUN box at the bottom of the start menu and turn off most of the startup items. Vista comes CLOGGED with ram-sucking swill out of the box. if you disable the unnecessary startup items and services you'll see a performance increase.

And YES, that power supply would fit but I don't see the power supply making a dramatic difference in your machine.Trying to make my computer better, give me some opinions?
Hey your on the right track, your power supply will work and once you've done that you've pretty much reached the top of what you can do for you computer, you'll be successfully be using it at full capacity like you wanted.Trying to make my computer better, give me some opinions?

  • Building your first gaming PC.?

So I am thinking about building my first PC. Previously, the only thing I have done inside of a computer is upgrading/changing the power supply, ram, and graphics card (over 8 years ago!). How much of a leap would it be to build the whole thing? I mean something like going to amazon.com or tigerdirect.com and buying a CPU, motherboard, etc.

Recommended sites and books? I'm always afraid articles and books are out of date since these things change so fast.Building your first gaming PC.?
The only thing that may be slightly complicated (we don't want all the shiny new goodies to burn and fizzle, right?) is the motherboard and to a slighly lesser degree; the CPU. Check out the following how-to sites, they have very detailed articles about system building with pictures and videos.

    I would recommend 100% newegg.com Their customer service is beyond all others, A+ on it in every way. And all you need to really know is your spending limit. The first thing you need to pick is a motherboard. Motherboards support specific kinds and series of processors, so pick one that supports the kind of processor you want ( they are listed in the specs section of the motherboards on newegg) Once you have a motherboard picked, find a cpu that matches it. After that use your motherboard specs to determine the speed/type of ram you want, harddrives and cd-drives (hds and cds will both be sata cabling now.) Find a graphics card, which will inevitably be 16x pci express slot, and whatever components you want. Once you have all those core parts picked, add up power requirements, find a decent power supply. and presto you are done. Place the cpu in the board and using the perfect amount of thermal grease is the trickiest part in my opinion. You should find an online tutorial using google for the thermal greasing if you have never done it before, it makes a huge difference. Also, I would suggest a water cooling system if you can afford it for the cpu/graphics card. They work much better and it is cool to just say, %26quot;Yeah, my computer is liquid cooled.%26quot;

The 7600GS is 4 generations out of date and it's a low-performance card.

The HD3850 is a gamer-level card and is only 1 generation out-of-date. It will spank the 7600GS in every respect.

You don't need a 600-watt PSU to drive the HD3850. A high-quality 400W unit like the Corsair with 30 amps on its +12V rail is already way more than enough power for the HD3850. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/

Computer won't cut on after I upgraded it. Please Help...?

I have a amd 3800 cpu, my mother board is a nvidia 6100 chipset, it was 512 megs ram, video card came on chipset and shared the memory with my ram. It was Vista Premium. Ecery thing worked, but I wanted to continue upgrading. So I installed 2 gigs ram, running dual channel, and I made my exsisting mother board a 3800 dual core, and added a 250 gig hd, up until then every thing was working with optimal performance, I just needed a better video card, so I went with the nvidia 7300 gt 256 mg. I turn the computer on it works, cut it off and after that it never came back on. I assumed it needed more power after all the upgrades, so I changed the power supply, still no fix, so I try reverting back to the original setup, I take out the video card, new hd, and even the added ram, still won't come on. Is it my mother board? If I have to change my mother board, then how will I use the product key from my vista disk, isn't it set to my original mother board? Please help.Computer won%26039;t cut on after I upgraded it. Please Help...?
The power supply seems to be detecting an overload condition on one of the power rails. Try running PC w/ bare minimum devices, that is, detached HDD, ODD, FDD and just 1 stick RAM. If it turns on, you could only get as far as BIOS. Shutdown, reattach HDD only then turn ON PC again. You should be able to load Windows. Continue reattaching devices until you pinpoint the device that is causing the overload.

If PC won't turn ON w/ minimum devices, inspect the processor heatsink. Make sure the base or any metallic part is not touching anything on the motherboard. Also try dismounting the motherboard and power ON the PC w/ motherboard not touching anything %26quot;electrically%26quot; in the case.

If this does not work out, your motherboard could be defective and you may have to contact Microsoft so that you could transfer your OS license to your replacement set up.Computer won%26039;t cut on after I upgraded it. Please Help...?

  • Why won't my CD drive work?

My CD drive used to work with no problems until i changed my power supply. Invest in a Cd/DVD Laser Lens cleaner, in most cases, using this will fix your problem.

Can i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?

i understand how to install and remove components - its the change in wattage etc that is of concern as i have never done this before.

the requirement for this comes from a graphics card upgrade that now repeatedly tells me that it is not recieving enough power to enable it to work properly!

is there anything else that i should be aware of?

many thanksCan i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
Yes, you can. Fit and forget. 4 screws. You don't need to worry about anything else. The change of wattage means it is capable of delivering more power *as required*. It doesn't mean it will be pumping more electricity into everything...Can i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
You should be perfectly fine to upgrade the PSU as this will help to put the extra power where you need it. Just make sure that there is enough power for your graphics card then you will be ok. Go ahead and fit it.Can i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
It's one of the easier things to do.

Just make sure all the hard drives, CD drives, fans (especially the CPU fan) have their power plugged in.

One more thing. Does your graphics board have a power slot? You may want to open up your case and see if you just need to plug a four prong power cable into your vid card. Can i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
it would not be a good idea to fit a more powerful unit before checking that your machine can take it. or you could fry the comp.

check with the comp makers web site for support and see what they think. try some-one like pc world for advice and or a pc repair shop. let them think you would need them to do the job and once you have the advice you can choose to fit the new gear or not yourself. Can i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
YepCan i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
don't remove the power supply to use a higher watts if so if u have a warrinty its invaildCan i simply replace my existing power supply unit (PC) with another that has higher wattage?
Yes you can, unless it is a Dell or an eMachines, as they use proprietary power supplies. In which case there are 3rd party vendors that do make higher wattage power supplies for their computers. What make and model do you have?

How do I hack a PC power supply to put out 13.8v?

How do I force a pc power supply to regulate at 13.8v or at least 13.5v without using a bunch of resistors. The manufacturer made it put out 12v without huge resistors. It seems I should be able to change a few things and get a volt or two extra. Basically if the manufacturer wanted it to be 13.8v instead of 12v, what would they change? Can I ask you why you would want to do this?

    Low Profile Graphics Card Question?

I am looking into buying the EVGA GeForce 6200 256MB PCI Graphics Card. It is low-profile, but I am wondering if it comes with a low profile bracket or if I will have to buy one. My computer is the Dell Inspiron 531s. I know it has a PCI-E slot, but I don't want to change my power supply.

When I get a low profile bracket, how will I go about putting it on the card even though I will only be using the DVI port. It looks as if the low profile bracket will block out the VGA port, or the end of the bracket will be over top of the VGA port. Will this cause any problems? Do they even make a low - profile bracket for the 6200 256MB?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!Low Profile Graphics Card Question?
Yes, seriously, listen to him. The 6200 is a low end 6 series card. You will have a problem running games from even year 2000 on max graphics =/

You can purchase a decent psu for cheap. I love my Orion hp585. Google that. like $25 and its 580w. Powers my 8800gt. Don't settle for a PCI card just because it's easy or cheap. PCI isnt really made for graphics, agp slots were. then 8x agp. then pci-express. A 6200 PCI card won't be an upgrade at all...Low Profile Graphics Card Question?
Most modern games cant even played on 6200 they need at minimun 6600.......and that is minimum....get a 8600gt 256mb...i have it and it is great....it run s about 75 bucks.

Voltage rating for a 3kw sweet corn steamer?

How can i change/modify the power supply socket from 110v to 220v so that I can use a 220v, 3kw sweetcorn steamer?

Is there such thing to change the 110V to 220V?Voltage rating for a 3kw sweet corn steamer?
You will need a 3KVA step-up transformer, which will almost certainly cost you more than a new 110V sweetcorn steamer.

In some places, though, %26quot;110V%26quot; house supplies are actually biphase 110-0-110V with two live wires; each one being positive when the other is negative and vice versa. This allows for heavy-current appliances like cookers, immersion heaters, showers and night storage heaters. Check with your electricity supplier -- it may need nothing more than an extra cable to your fuse box.Voltage rating for a 3kw sweet corn steamer?
You need what is called a %26quot;step-up transformer%26quot; or converter

You can buy converters that change 110v to 220v.

    Here's one.

    http://www.yourspares.co.uk/proddetail.a

The right one depends on which country you live in. You also need to find one that can work at 3kw - that's 3000va not this one -- so it's going to cost.

want to upgrade will i have to change the motherboard and how much ram should i use and should i change the power supply or do i only do this if i change the motherboardLooking to upgrade my pc want to know is it possible to use dual core proccessors with amd athlon 2200 motherb
start from scratch my guess your motherboard will most likely be %26quot;socket A%26quot; and will not not support dual core

therefore to change mobo would also mean change memory

it would also be useful to change psu as old one will be ready to pack up anyway and new comps need 450watt or better especially with new graphics cards

memory would be 1Gb or better, buy as dual channel kit

if you stay with AMD get socket am2 mobo and processor

dont know about intel not used them for years now but they normally as good or better than amd but always more expensiveLooking to upgrade my pc want to know is it possible to use dual core proccessors with amd athlon 2200 motherb
If you are going from a single core to a dual core processor, you will have to change the motherboard. This includes also changing the memory and possibly the video card. Keep power consumption in mind as you upgrade. You may need to upgrade your power supply if it is less than 300Watts.

1GB of RAM is suitable for most tasks.Looking to upgrade my pc want to know is it possible to use dual core proccessors with amd athlon 2200 motherb
No this is mother board specific. You would need to match the mother board to the processor. You may be able to go up a revision or two in amd but not switch to intel.Looking to upgrade my pc want to know is it possible to use dual core proccessors with amd athlon 2200 motherb
It depends. You should check the motherboard manufactures web site for details. Look very carefully under the support tab and email the manufacture if you don't understand their web site.

    Example:

A Gigabyte motherboard that has a single core Socket 775 Pentium D is capable of handling a Dual Core but it has to be a Pentium D Duo Core. This can be done with no BIOS flash or driver upgrade for processor affinity.

A ASUS motherboard single core Socket 478B Pentium D will not accept a Dual Core. Different hardware make on the processor connection.

A Biostar Single Processor Pentium D Socket 775 can accept a Dual Core but needs an upgrade of the BIOS to function correctly.

I worked all three example within the last 2 weeks.Looking to upgrade my pc want to know is it possible to use dual core proccessors with amd athlon 2200 motherb
might be better off have a tech rebuilt it. gonna cost. but they will do it right.

How do power supplies that accept 100-240 VAC input work?

How do they produce a consistent voltage output for such a large range of input voltages?

What happens to their current draw as the input voltage changes? Does it change to keep the power input constant? How do power supplies that accept 100-240 VAC input work?
They use a full wave bridge and capacitor to generate 140 to 350 volts DC then apply that to a high voltage high frequency chopper to convert it to AC of a high frequency, then to a transformer for isolation. High frequency (usually in the range of 20kHz to 100 kHz) reduces the size of the transformer. The output of the (step down) transformer is rectified and filtered and is the output DC voltage. It is applied in a feedback loop (optically isolated) back to the chopper where the duty cycle is varied to adjust the output voltage to the value desired.

Yes, current input decreases as input AC voltage increases.

.How do power supplies that accept 100-240 VAC input work?
Variable input power supplies (simple ones) are based on bridge rectifiers. See here for an example:

    http://www.electronickits.com/kit/comple

Basically, they allow voltage to pass up to a certain level, and block all voltage above that level. This is the reason that the output voltage is generally (but not always) lower than the input voltage. It's also the reason the output voltage is usually DC and the input is AC. A laptop power supply is a good example of this.

Once you have DC, you can use a transformer to lower the voltage level to the one you want. But they key is that the diode bridge will first lower the DC so that it is the same regardless of the input AC by capping the input AC.

For two equal devices (say two laptops) used at 120V and 240V, the input current should be half for the 240V system since the final power requirements should be the same for the two laptops. How do power supplies that accept 100-240 VAC input work?
in smps supplies it is done by pwm(pulse width modulation) technic. regulation is done by varying the width of the pulse. for lower voltages at the input we need to increase the width and for higher voltage at the input width is reduced.

Physics (10 points for first correct answer)?

    1. The resistance of each load increases by a factor of 1.5.

    2. The resistance of each load remains the same.

How do I know if I have a computer power supply problem?

So this morning for the life of me my computer would not boot. The computer would power on, but the bios would fail to post. I tried changing the bios jumper settings which did not work. As a last resort I started unplugging things then booting, to no avail, then plugging things back in. Finally, I took out 1 stick of ram and the computer was able to boot! I figured the stick I had removed was the cuplrit, but just to make sure I plugged it back in, and removed the %26quot;good one%26quot;. The computer booted again fine. I plugged them both in and as I write this question the computer seems to be working fine again.

Can anyone explain to me what is going on? Is it possible, I have a power supply problem? How do I know if I have a computer power supply problem?
For most of hardware failure i came across, they always share 2 similar symptoms, either it need to warm up for a while before it start working OR it only work intermittently.

I would suggest not to worry about other hardwares inside the pc cause bios boot up first, then it start to communicate with the basic hardware like harddrive, memory, keyboard..., if no bio setting you can change, either is the motherboard or the power supply. Since seldem people will mess up the motherboard, and power supply can go bad because of age or dusty environment, from the symptoms you got, mostly is the faulty power supply.

My experience on a failed power supply is you have to rock the tower, from side to side for a few times to a few minutes, press the button, then it works, i still dont know why, but it similar to your case when you move around your pc as you take out the ram.

My conclusion is if your pc fail to boot up to the bios screen, ie dark screen, monitor receive no signal(in most case amber light), but your tower has at least 1 light lit up, but not power on green light as in a booted up pc, it is the power supply problem. How do I know if I have a computer power supply problem?
computer just turns off or will not come on . is a signHow do I know if I have a computer power supply problem?
Well first off, if you had any problems with your power supply, your computer would either not turn on, or would reboot randomly. So the power supply shouldn't really be the case. But if you want to test the power supply anyways, you can actually purchase power supply testers and test the connections to see if they are good.

If the BIOS failed the POST, then something was up with some of your hardware. POST is supposed to run tests for your hardware to make sure that it is all there, BEFORE it boots into the operating system. Maybe the memory sticks just needed reseating. It's a good idea to go back and unplug/plug in hardware again after you have used your computer for a while because all the dust and heat inside the case can actually cause the chips/connections to come off or become unseated (in some cases).

Take note of this problem and keep a record of any other problems you have. If you have this problem again, then it's good to have a little record so that you can show to someone if you ever need it repaired. Sometimes computers have intermittent problems and it's a good idea to write down when you had it and what kind of error messages you had.How do I know if I have a computer power supply problem?
Most likely, if you had a power supply problem, it would not turn on at all.

The problem you described sounds to me like a poorly seated memory stick or a bit of chip creep. That is when the heating and cooling of the cards causes it to expand out of the socket a very small amount, but enough to cause issues.

My brother just put in a new power supply and videocard in his desktop computer. now his sound doesnt work?

so he just put them in and he did it properly but now the sound on his computer just doesnt work. like you can hear it but you can't change the volume or anything. its a dell computer windows xp.

does anybody know how to fix it?My brother just put in a new power supply and videocard in his desktop computer. now his sound doesnt work?
First try checking sound in Device Manager. If the new videocard has HDMI, sound for HDMI may have been enabled thus the controls are on the HDMI related software.

Try disabling sound to HDMI then updating the sound driver. OR do a system restore to the date before installing new graphics card. Then install just the graphics driver but not the HDMI related software.

  • What do I need to consider?

It looks like I may need to change my power supply on my pc. Is it as easy as just going out and buying the first 400w one I see or are there certain things that need to be accounted for or considered first? Are there different types/fittings? If so how do I know which would be right for my PC?What do I need to consider?
You need to consider the type or size of your computer casing, if it is an ATX or micro ATX, etc. But usually computers have ATX casing.

Just a tip, buy the same or higher watts as your original power supply. Do not go down below the original.

Yes, you may want to ask for someone to help you install that or find more information in the internet on how to install that, without burning your computer! Just kidding!

Goodluck! What do I need to consider?
Most power supplies have the same fixings and should fit into most cases. Take your existing power supply out and take it with you to make sure you buy one of the right type.

It's only a few plugs and screws. What do I need to consider?
get some one Howe nose Wat thy AR doingWhat do I need to consider?
Power supplies have standard fittings for PC cases, only around 4 or 5 screws into the back of the base unit. Only thing to consider really is how strong you need the PSU to be i.e. 400w ..500w etc all depends on how much the PC needs to power, graphics card demand, amount of RAM, type of processor etc. What do I need to consider?
I would get a 500 or 550watt PSU. As then you`ll have plenty of power should you decide to add more hardware to it. Also, I would recommend visiting www.ebuyer.co.uk as they have some very good deals on power supplies. I bought a 550w silent for under æ‹¢30. It powers my high end graphics card without any problems.

Computer restarting during some gaming on Windows 7 and a GeForce GTS 250. Could be power supply?

I think I have an issue with my power supply but I have little knowledge of it. I know enough to install hard drives, video cards and even transfer a mother board to another case. I know how to physically replace a power supply but I'm not sure if I gotta change some settings on the BIOS or whatever. The one I have is pretty old and I think it's causing the problems.

I used this one program CPUID and these are the results

Guess the main question is, do you just swap out the power supply with the new one and what do you guys suggest the voltage on it?

I'm running a Pentium Dual Core 2.50 GHZ, 4 GB ram and a 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Can't remember what type of motherboard exactly but I do know it's an ASUS.Computer restarting during some gaming on Windows 7 and a GeForce GTS 250. Could be power supply?
If it only happens during gaming then the most likely culprits are buggy video drivers or a bad power supply. It's almost certainly the latter if you hear the psu cutting out, or the fan speed changing when the reboots occur.

Yes, you'd just disconnect everything from the old psu and swap the new one into place- only takes about 5 minutes with a screwdriver.

For a GTS 250 a 450W psu is recommended, so get at least 500W (or a 450W from Corsair). Anything higher is just allowing room for future upgrades. But there's usually a big price jump above the 500W mark, as many 550-650W units are SLI/Crossfire certified, providing two PCI-E power connectors for video cards. Great if you have dual cards or a single older power-hungry card that requires two connectors- like a GTX 260, Radeon 4870 etc, Radeon 5850 etc.

If your computer is crashing only during game play, i would recommend checking out your drivers are

up to date to start. Look to make sure your power supply can power your video card and computer Accessories.

I would check the fan on your video card make sure that is working, as this card tends to run hot and the fans on this cards tend to go. I have had to swap 2 pny gts 250 1gb ddr3 video cards cause the fan on them kept dying on me.

Finally got tired and just when i got the new card i went and took out the cover from the heat sink on the video card, i took the heat sink out, cleaned it and reapplied artic silver 5 and replace the thermal tape, and reattached the heat sink. Left the cover out with the fan out and instead i used this fan instead,

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Antec+-+Spot

I took this apart and just kept the fan and switch part. this fan sits on the heat sink just fine and instead of having it being power by the graphic card, i hooked it up to my mobo.

This worked for me and stopped my PC from locking up cause my video card kept overheating, now im able to play MW2 with no problems.Computer restarting during some gaming on Windows 7 and a GeForce GTS 250. Could be power supply?
Can u please specify the model of your power supply? Besides having a high wattage power supply, I suggest knowing how much current does your psu drive on ur +12v rail. Google said that gts250 requires a PSU with min 400 watts with a current rating of 30Amp or more on the +12 rail.

If for instance u have a 500 watts PSU with only 22amp then ur system will shutdown or worse case ir PSU or even motherboard will short out. to calculate the current rating on ur +12v. Look at the power at ur PSU table and look at the power under ur +12v1 and or +12v2 and divide it by 12.

    Example, i have a gigabyte superb 550p.

under my +12v1 and +12v2 i have 360 watts of power, the other 190 watts is driven to my power connectors and motherboard power. so....

    360/12 = 30amp

meaning i can juice up any GPU which requires 30amp or less, (my 9800gt requires 26Amp so im good to go) anything above that would hurt ur PSU and even ur pc. Hope it helps.

Anyone has probs with external drive power supply?

I recently modded my Western Digital Elements 500Gb external hard disk from external to internal power.

What happened was that the included adapter for it (made by AcBel, model nr AD6008) suddenly stopped working (which by goggling it, turned out to have happened to a lot of people). After looking at what I would be charged for a new one (~50EUR), I decided to see if there were other options.

I went to check out some threads regarding the computer internal power supply and it turns out that CD/DVD, HDD and Floppy disk are all supplied with 5V/12V, which is exactly what is needed for most external hard drives as well.

How to configure line voltages on a power supply?

My friend has this problem with his power supply where it shuts off whenever gaming. I used to have this same problem until I switched the line voltages on my psu from 230v to 115v. In canada it should be at 115v. but if his psu doesn't have the red switch the volts, how do I change the volts or is it even possible? How to configure line voltages on a power supply?
It may not be switchable. Read the label and it should tell you if it is or not.How to configure line voltages on a power supply?
If there is no selector switch, power supply (PSU) either has a fixed 115V setting OR it is %26quot;Auto-ranging%26quot; (100 - 240V capable).

Shutting off during gaming can be an indication of PSU overloading. If your friend upgraded his graphics card but not the power supply, that could be the cause of the problem. Typically, most graphics card would just draw 50% or less power in 2D mode (prior to gaming). It goes full power in 3D mode (gaming). That's the time when it could potentially overload or stress small power supplies (300W or less).

If absolutely nothing happens... no beeps, no nothing... then your motherboard is probably dead. If it were anything but the board, then it should at least beep. If it does beep, then get your motherboard manual to look up the meaning of the beep code. That will give you some insight as to what is broken.

I suppose it could be the power switch. If it isn't, then definately the mobo.

koalatcomics answer is the correct one. Most likely, since you leave your computer on all the time, the switch is dirty and is not functioning as a switch anymore.

The power switches in most electronic devices are now self cleaning. If you don't use them, they will become corroded and then fail. Either replace, or if you are handy, clean the switch.

  • Graphics card, EVGA nVidia GeForce GT240 1 GB DDR5?

I purchased a new Dell Studio XPS 8100 desktop a few months ago and decided to upgrade my graphics card to play games in higher settings and more smoothly. I run on an i5 3.2 ghz processor, currently with a 512 gb DDR3 graphics card (how weak %26gt;%26lt;) and 3 GB DDR3 RAM. My power supply is 350 watts. The card apparently requires a 300 watt ps. I was looking for a budget video card, preferably 1 GB DDR5 and came across this card. I know it's a GT240, so it's pretty old. But there were no reviews on Amazon and three on tigerdirect.com which state that it was a decent card for the price yet one states that a 450 watt ps may not be enough. The 512 mb DDR5 version of this card had many positive reviews.

Anyway, has anyone else used this card? Mind sharing your experience with me or giving me any advice?

Any other budget cards available for a 350 watt power supply? Changing my power supply would be my last resort.

    Thanks!

Car entertainment How do you change the wiring round on the male side of a ISO plug ?

I have just bought a new CD player for my 99 astra. When I turn the ignition off if forgets all the radio stations. I discovered that it is because two wires are mixed up on the iso power supply. I went to change them round and I could not get the little metal fittings out of the plastic plug to swap them round and I'd rather not cut and shut the wires. Any ideas?Car entertainment How do you change the wiring round on the male side of a ISO plug ?
Have you bought a wiring harness/adapter? If not, you can but one from your local car parts supplier, it just clips in to your existing wiring loom and then plugs into the radio.

If you don't want to do that, i'd just clip the wires and solder the joints...either that or you could use some plastic connectors, you can also get those from your car part supplier.Car entertainment How do you change the wiring round on the male side of a ISO plug ?
once the metal prongs are out of the ISO plug they tend to fall out again later on, so you're kind of back to square one. if the radio has a radio specific to ISO lead, you could swap the 2 wires on that (red and yellow), vauxhall will do the lead too, or autoleads. The part number for autoleads is PC2-04-4. There's loads on ebay for under a fiver!

or... depending on where you bought the radio from you could always just get them to swap the 2 wires over for youCar entertainment How do you change the wiring round on the male side of a ISO plug ?
You might be able to push the tabs down with a large sewing needle and get the connectors out of the holder. If that doesn't work, get another plug, break the old one and put the wires in the new one the way you want them. If it was me I'd cut the wires and switch them, soldering them together for the best connection and cover them with shrink tube or heavy plastic tape.Car entertainment How do you change the wiring round on the male side of a ISO plug ?
The easy way to do this is to buy 2 pair of spade and covered conectors from Halfords or some where like that and cut the two red wires and swap them over this will be easier and you can then also swap them back over if needed in the future.

I know this because I have done the same on my 02 plate Zafira and 06 Astra and on a 51 plate Pug 206.

there will be a sticker, usually on the back of the computer, that tells you the power usage Volts, Amps Hertz and maybe watts same for the monitorHow do i know what kind of power supply goes in to my computer?
Turn your computer off and unplug it. Open the case. Carefully remove the cables that connect the power supply to the motherboard. Write down what cables go where or if you have a digital camera, take close-up shots. Then carefully remove the power supply. Take it to the computer store with you and tell them you want one like it. You can ask about upgrades there also.

You state the processor, but not the power supply and ask if you should change the power supply?

Well, power supply DOES matter, if it's only 380 watts and you buy a higher end card it might just kill it. Knowing pre-built computers, their power supplies are much cheaper quality and if it does work, it will probably be close to its max. Bad thing is, since it's cheap I don't know what will happen when it's at it's max.

Go open your case and check the wattage, 450+ should be enough.

As for installing a video card:

Open your case %26gt; Ground yourself and touch the case %26gt; Remove existing video card (if there is one, if there isn't, it's integrated, so don't worry if there's none.) %26gt; Plug in video card %26gt; Put case back together %26gt; Plug your monitor cable to the video card %26gt; Tun your computer on %26gt; Install the CD that came with it and download the drivers (Or look for newer ones)How to install a video card for a gateway pc with a pci express slot?
all you have to do is unscrew the screw that hold the videocard in place (should only be one)

Then yank it out. It might be hard at first, but don't worry about damaging it, just make sure u don't shock any of ur partsHow to install a video card for a gateway pc with a pci express slot?
Dont forget some high end cards need additional power supply plug and may not work without it? Any new system needs at least 450 watt power supply! Check all documentation that comes with the card.

Theres no easy way to find out if your system is getting enough power. I don't believe there're any software that will do this for you. If you know a lot about circuits then I guess you can measure voltage with a multimeter or something but even still that's very difficult and dangerous (easy risk of shorting stuff).

But from your setup I think 550W is somewhat borderline. How is your pump powered? is it by AC or by your power supply - if its through the power supply I would say you're drawing a little too much.

Since this unit dose not come with power adaptor. It has direct plug in in to the port behind the sub-woofer unit and other end to the wall outlet. Is there any way to convert the power supply from UK to US (220v to 110v). For example Desktop PCs have a switch behind every desktop unit to change power from 110v to 220v or vise versa.

Anyone has any idea how to make this happen in Bose Companion 3 system.

Simpliest that you need is a step up transformer to convert the 110V (wall outlet) to 220V (for your bose).

%26gt;You might be needing a new avr for your pc so might as well get the one with dual/multiple voltage output (220v) that you can connect the bose.

  • Power failure on computer.?

My comp screen went black and I believe it is a power failure issue because it only has a 450 watt power supply as well as a dual core processor and a few other components etc. I was just wondering if anyone knows how to reset the motherboard so that it will turn on again. i need some files off of the comp asap though i plan on changing the power supply very soon as well. the motherboard shows it is receiving power but it isnt powering up. any help is appreciated, thank youPower failure on computer.?
get power supply tester. ebay or local comp store, but first I would change monitor, to make sure that monitor is not bad or your video card is not bad

How hard is it to install new motherboard and processor in a computer.?

Took it to the shop to have it diagnosed and they need to be replaced. Im gonna try it myself to save labor costs. Ive changed the power supply previously with no problems, is it pretty simple to switch out these parts? ThanksHow hard is it to install new motherboard and processor in a computer.?
Swapping processors is very easy. Changing out a motherboard isn't nearly as simple, though. If you want to try it, here's the best way. Practice on the one that's installed right now. You can't mess it up any more than it already is, and you'll learn.

First, make sure that the power supply is NOT plugged into the wall. Then, in your kitchen (you can't work on a computer while standing on carpet!!), open your case, and before touching anything inside, touch an unpainted metal part of the case.

If you go back into the carpeted part of the house, ground yourself again on an unpainted portion of the case. If you don't do this, you'll have to buy replacements for all of the %26quot;parts%26quot; inside your case that you touch, even while just practicing.

Practice removing the memory, and reinstalling it. Practice removing the processor and it's heatsink, and reinstalling it. Practice taking out all of your PCI/AGP/PCI-E cards, and reinstalling them. If done correctly, you can save a considerable amount of money, by doing it yourself. If not done correctly, you can cost yourself hundreds of extra dollars, by having to replace parts that weren't bad to begin with.;-)How hard is it to install new motherboard and processor in a computer.?
It isn't that hard to put these parts together, but the problem would be making sure that they will actually work especially the motherboard what with all the wires and jumper settings you need to set. Unless you know the basic principles of PC rigging, save yourself some headache and a lot of frustation and let a qualified tech do the job.How hard is it to install new motherboard and processor in a computer.?
Changing the motherboard is more complicated, and it is worth the cost to let an expert do it in a few minutes. I have replaced a motherboard, and will not do it again. How hard is it to install new motherboard and processor in a computer.?
not so hard.. hey, i'm 13.. i've bought every of basic of pc hardware's.. i install them by myself.. easy such abc..

for the processor, you just need to be careful when you want to install it on the motherboard.. make sure it is compatible and put it right on the hole...How hard is it to install new motherboard and processor in a computer.?
Go to your local library and get a book on how to build PCs. They will take you through it step by step. Follow what alchemy said he's giving good advice to you. It isn't the hardest thing I've done. Just make certain that you have the proper mobo CPU socket size/manufacturer for the processor that you're planning to use. That means use a mobo designed for AMD for the processors that use sockets 754, 939, and AM2. Intel mobos are similar, but use different CPU socket size numbers .

is there an easy way to know if my motherboard is fried? I changed the power supply and the computer still didn't turn on so I%26quot;m assuming it's the motherboard. How to easily tell if my Motherboard is fried?
The easiest way to check if its burned is to sniff the burned smell, or check capacitors on the MBHow to easily tell if my Motherboard is fried?
Unless you have a motherboard tester it's impossible to know for sure if it's failed. You could remove the board and inspect it for burned components and circuits but it's not foolproof either.

If you're sure everything is connected correctly the next most common failure after the PSU is the motherboard with the CPU next.

Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?

Whenever I start my computer up, it only gets as far as the Welcome screen on Windows, and then re-starts. It does work occasionally, though. I thought it was a problem with the power supply, but changed the power supply and the problem was still there. If anyone knows what this problem is caused by or how to fix it, tell me.Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
It could be many things, from over heating to Spyware infection .. I'd be tempted to hoover out the case especially around the fan that sits over the processor .. maybe even leave the side casing off to allow more air to circulate (only while you test the theory)

Failing that I wouldn't bother with a OS repair in that, if you do have a virus, it will still be there when you have wasted 40 minutes or so reinstalling windows. I would be inclined to wipe the drive ...but... there is probably some good advice to follow from other members, such as downloading spybot or something ..that's if you can keep the machine running long enough ...!

If the anti-virus does not rectify it.. then use the OS cd to repair it.. I would suggest 'avast pro' or 'kaspersky' for antivirus Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
I had this problem it was cursed by over heating I fixed by turning it off removing the plug from the wall sockit removing the fans and giving them a good clean I can not say that this will work for you for sure buts its worth a try if it dose not work try reformating and reloading windows Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
its probably not your motherboard because if it was it wouldn't get to the welcome screen either,

if it boots into windows the bit with the mouse and its not DOS then its a registry problem or virus or bug ,

i recommend booting into safe mode then using ccleaner, spybot S%26amp;D and the windows recovery CD (dont format just repair)

if it doesnt boot into windows then its your hard disk, these things wear out over the years and restart randomly and loose data then it gets to a stages that it doesnt even boot or detect it.

so it could be a hd upgrade for you...

if its not any of those, and you are sure its not your hard disk that is broken reformat using windows CD and start fresh

Does anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
i have seen this caused by a disc being left in the drive from previous use .if this is the case just remove disc %26amp; then start up windowsDoes anyone know what this problem with my computer might be caused by?
You have a hard drive error which should be easily fixed by runnng checkdisk.

Can you run the PC in safe mode? or try this on one of the rare occaisions it boots in normal mode.

to use checkdisk simply press the Windows Logo key and R,

type cmd in the line in the window that pops up.

    in the new box that pops up you will see something like C:\Documents and Settings\my user name%26gt;

after the last %26gt; you should see the flashing cursor, now type

chkdsk /r /f (note the spaces - these are important)

    then press the Enter key

This checks the Hard Disk, the /F fixes errors on the disk the /R locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. If you have more than 1 drive or partition then you should check that as well. When you have finished checking drive C then type chkdsk E: /r /f or what ever the new drive letter name is to check that partition.

It may take several hours to complete if you have a large drive.

If you cant get it to do this in either safe or normal mode then you will have to run this from the Windows CD. Boot from the CD, at the first option select R, when you get the option press 1 to enter the C: drive, type the Admin password (if you don't use one just press enter) and then type chkdsk /r (note the space - it is important). You will note you can not use the /f switch, press Enter and allow it to run, when completed you will get a list of file info including any bad sectors found. Type exit and press Enter and it should reboot. Hopefully it will boot normally.

If it finds any bad sectors consider changing the drive and don't rely on it too heavily until you do. Windows will mark the sectors as bad and not write to them but these errors have a habit of getting bigger.

Is it possible to integrate the AVR circuit to the PC Power Supply circuit, what are the similarity of these 2?

We buy AVR to protect our PC from voltage fluctuations, now this is a separate unit. How about integrating that AVR circuit in the power supply so to have the same protection. The questions are:

    1. What are the similarity and differences between AVR and a power supplyin terms of circuit connections and components? 2. What part in the power supply circuit should we connect the circuit which will work to regulate voltage fluctuations?

    3. In terms of heat dissipation, will this integration adds up to the heat in the power supply?

    4. Will there be a change in the performance of two separate units (AVR and power supply) vs. Power supply with integrated AVR cirucit?

    5. Will there be a need to increase the size of the power supply to accommodate the additional AVR circuitry?

    6. In financial aspect, will it be cheaper to have a power supply integrated with an AVR circuit than having two components (AVR and power supply)? Is it possible to integrate the AVR circuit to the PC Power Supply circuit, what are the similarity of these 2?
By AVR, I am assuming you mean Automatic Voltage Regulator. Most good computer power supplies have AVR integrated into their design. The only way to know if your AVR circuitry is working correctly is to test them under load, preferably %75 or higher.

If you suspect your AVR isn't working correctly there could be 2 problems. 1st, you are putting too much of a load on the power supply or 1 of the devices are drawing too much current. Check out the rating for each device connected to the power supply. Perhap you are over the rating of your power supply.

Also, it the power coming out of your outlet may be the problem depending on where you live. Steady 50 cycles minimum at 110 VAC is the standard for DC power supplies. You will need an oscilloscope to check proper cycles and to see transient noise/phase problems. My suggestion af you thing you have a proplem with you power from the socket, add a UPS and see if your problems go away.

  • Is my Motherboard dead?

I have an Intel Celeron 2.8Ghz, 512Mb, 80Gb capacity eMachines PC that has been playing devilish tricks on me fof GodKnows how long. It started by starting up on its own and then finally couldn't boot when I press on the power button. Changing power supply and eliminating all the other components couldn't solve the problem. Wipping the power switch button seemed to have solved the problem for it started functioning then one day stopped again. Using screw driver on the jumper settings seemed to work till it finally stopped. The mother board was changed for a new mercury motherboard. One week later, it also stopped working.

What can be the problem? I've been told it is the power supply and that both motherboards are dead. I don't want to buy another motherboard to have a reoccurence of the same old problem. Please Help!Is my Motherboard dead?
Sounds like the bad capacitors have struck again. These are all symptoms. Pop open the case and look at the capacitors around the CPU. They are about an inch tall and are usually purple and gold. They may have ballooned out and have a crusty or rusty secretion coming out, If this is the case you will need a new main board. This will help.

your first problem is that you have an Emachine... those things are paperweights with cords.

I would recommend getting a new machine alltogether. Is my Motherboard dead?
Change the power supply as well as the Motherboard, Power supply is friying your Mother boards. Is my Motherboard dead?
First, buy a power supply tester, and verify you do have a good ps.

I'd guess you have a bad switch on the case or dead mobo's.Is my Motherboard dead?
Well if you already check the ram, hard drive, or any other components, then yeah its dead. Have you try bought a new power supply?

My as well buy a whole new one or custom a new one.Is my Motherboard dead?
We need to determine first the current symptoms that you have, if it is no power or simply no post. No power means that all LED lights (power LED, motherboard LED if available, etc) are all OFF. It that is the case then you have a no power issue.

It is no post, if you have power lights ON but you get just a black screen and you can't hear any activity coming from the Hard drive nor see any boot prompts, as soon as you press the power button. Check the fans inside the system, are they running??

If it is a no power issue, troubleshot first the power supply, swap a known good power supply into the system and see if it powers-up. Also, to test your current power supply, test it on another system as well. If your current power supply works on a different system, then there's nothing wrong with it.

If it is no post, you need to strip your system to basic parts, meaning, remove expansion cards (sound card, network card, modem etc), unplug the hard drive, cd/dvd rom drives and disconnect all peripherals at the back of your system. so you should only have monitor, keyboard, mouse, motherboard, memory and video card. Power up the system and check if it sends signals on your screen such as looking for a hard drive. If it still doesn't work, check the memory, see if it is plugged in properly into the slots, try switching slots, then if you have 2 rams try testing each ram individually and see if it posts. If it does post with one ram, therefore, the other is defective.

Also, see if there are any burnt marks inside the system, possibly caused by heat or lightning.

Hope you can provide your findings, will take it from there. Have a great day :)

Most computers will use a generic power supply. All you need is a screw driver. takes about two mins.

Open your case up and take a close look at the leads coming from the PS. The power connectors to the drives are all the same unless you have SATA drives and they have a different type of plug.

The mother board may take two plugs, a large one and a small four pin one. Make sure your new power supply has the right kind of plugs.

Best to take old one with you to the shop when you purchase the new one.Upgrading PC power suplies?
Not all power supplies are the same - Dell is notorious for having non-standard connectors as are many others.

Before you go tearing it out and taking it into a shop - do some research online for your particular brand and model of computer. If you are going to buy a new one from a competent local shop - you should be able to tell them the brand and model and they can sell you a new one - you shouldn't need to tear it out first.

As for the installation, getting the new one in place is easy. Making sure you get all the connectors hooked back up is harder. It sounds like you are already experienced enough to be swapping out cards and such, so it shouldn't be difficult for you.

Is there some way I could find the total power my pc consumes?

I have the new hp pavilion elite m9600t desktop and I customized the build. I was wondering since it had a power supply of around 420 watts or close to it, if I could test how many watts my computer uses so I could upgrade it's components.

The things I put in were one 1 light scribe 16x max DVD burner, the intel core i7 920 processor, 4 gbs of DDR3 SDRAM(2 sticks), 500 gb hard drive 7200 rpm SATA 3gb/s, 768 MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GS, wireless lan card, and that would be about it. I was wondering if someone knew how many watts these components would use up. Also, if I wanted to upgrade, how many watts I had left to upgrade. The main things are getting a 2nd dvd optical drive/burner, RAM(i know it would take only about 1.5v so it doesn't matter much, and last maybe a second graphics card if necessary. I was wondering if I needed to get another graphics card. Would it impact on the performance and the speed of the computer? What are the benefits of getting another one? And if I don't have enough power, can I change the power supply or should I just not bother with changing the power supply. Please give any answers or suggestions. Thank you.Is there some way I could find the total power my pc consumes?
To determine how much electricity your computer is actually using, you need a wattage meter which measures your PSU's electrical use at the wall AC outlet: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as

The 420W PSU that came with your HP can drive that 9600GS easily. The 9600GS is not all that powerful and draws only a maximum of 96 watts, which is nothing compared to top-of-the-line cards like the GTX295 which draws an insane 289 watts.

    Hope this helps.

  • Can I change USB port power?

I tried to connect my Nintendo DS Wi-Fi USB connector to one of the USB ports on my Logitech G11 keyboard but my computer says the port does not supply enough power to support it. I want to connect it to my keyboard because it is very convenient to plug and unplug it there.

I don't want to connect it to the front USB ports on my computer case because I am afraid I may hit it and break it. (It sticks out pretty far.)

Also I do not want to plug it into the back of the case because it is hard to get down there to plug/unplug it and I do not like the process running all the time.

So is it possible to change the power distribution to one of the USB ports on my keyboard? How? Alternate solutions are welcome. Can I change USB port power?
For about $2 you can get a usb extension, about a foot long. Then just plug extension into cpu and then place anywhere out of the way. Works as well as a hub but way less expensive and user-friendly.Can I change USB port power?
Get yourself a USB docking station. It plugs into any USB port on your PC and will allow you to plug in 4 USB devices. It does require that you plug it into an AC outlet also, but it's a very good option in your case. They're only about $20.

Hope this helps. Can I change USB port power?
First answer is correct. Just want to remind you to get a %26quot;powered hub%26quot; some are not powered. Can I change USB port power?
Have you plugged it into your pc to see if it works? If so, you can purchase a self-powered hub to plug in to the pc, and use that for the connector. If it doesn't work plugged into the pc, what you may need is a powered usb hub. It would plug into the keyboard port, and an ac adaptor would plug into regular power. There is no way to make a keyboard usb port into a powered one. You can install powered usb port into your computer http://www.cyberdata.net/products/pdf/us

but you have rejected that option in advance, anyway.

    Help with video card upgrade?

I am going to upgrade my video card and I want to know if I can keep the same power supply. Currently have a Geforce FX5200 128MB 32-bit ,and I am thinking of replacing it with a HIS Radeon9250 128MB 64-bit. So the question is can I swap them out with out having to change the power supply. If not can some one recommend a card that I can upgrade to with out changing power supply.

Im not sure what power supply I have (watts) and would appreciate if some one could tell me how to figure it out.Help with video card upgrade?
Rule of thumb is minimum 350-400 watts for a single card.... 500+ watts for SLI. Im running an EVGA NVidia based 9800GTX 512mb 675mhz GPU 1100mhz ram - dual channel (yes, card has dual gpu and dual ram banks)and the 3d marks are out of this world. One step up from that is the GTX series of NVidia cards, though the 9800 series is so close in performance I dont see the higher cost as any benefit. BTW, in benching tests, NVidia cards are by far the better choice over Radeon in all graphics capability catagories. Check out www.tigerdirect.com and search EVGA under video cards.

check out vid cards at www.tigerdirect.com and look up EVGA

How antique is this PC ?

i live in india and i assembled this PC in Feb 2007

    pentium D820 2.8 GHz

    512 MB ddr1

asus mobo with 865G intel chipset .( with intel extreme graphics 2 )

i know it is backward but i did not know any better.... then i do now . i have studied up extensively on configurations .

if i want to play quake 3 is this ok if i make RAM total 1 GB that is add 512 more ? the mobo seller told me then that integrated graphics is better . now if i want to change it i have to ( for a new graphics card ) change power supply too because the D820 is 90nm design and consumes a lot of power .

please help i am devastated .. ois this enough to play Quake 3 ?How antique is this PC ?
Compared to game pc , your pc is a little antique. CPU's slow, not enough RAM and graphic memory. Don't upgrade it buy new one if you can afford. How antique is this PC ?
about 3 years oldHow antique is this PC ?
That computer should be more than adequate for quake 3. The hardware you described is a few years old, but Quake 3 is even older.

The only potential problem I can see is your graphics card (or lack thereof). You're going to be using your motherboard's onboard graphics? I'm somewhat suspicious of that.

On the other hand, Quake 3 is an old game; that mobo might be able to handle it.How antique is this PC ?
maybe you should find out the company of this computer and call to purchase new parts you can finance these parts to depending on the company and if you dont have all of the money at one time (and if your credit is good), or why dont you order one off of HSN.com they have a dual core processer,14.1 or 15.4 ultrabright widescreen gateway laptop on flex pay meaning you pay on it every month. How antique is this PC ?
Does this card have a agp slot?

If it does, then you could buy a new agp graphics card, some are still being made. Just make sure the voltage is correct.

If not, then no amount of ram will get you any decent performance for games. Quake 2, yes, quake 3, not so sure.

    It is a fairly antique computer^_^ I like it^___^

JBV^_^How antique is this PC ?
It's not so antique as you say and it's a very capable machine for office tasks.

I would definitely add at least more 512MB of RAM and a decent graphics card (ATI or Nvidia based). Integrated graphics aren't better, perhaps more stable for office tasks but definitely not for games. How antique is this PC ?
If you are using a built-in graphics card, it steals memory from the main memory.

You should go for an external GPU, like an nVidia or ATI card with a minimum of 128 MB on board.

I recommend 1GB ram and a 256MB video card. Upgrade the PS to 400W or better. That mobo seller is full of it.How antique is this PC ?
Your on board graphics will be your problem, be sure you have the latest Intel graphics update for that mobo.

Ultimately, you would be better off with an upgraded graphics card like Nvidia 5950 series and above.

If not try tweaking your graphic settings such as anthroscopic filtering and such, start turning things down or off and look for improvements. How antique is this PC ?
The answers you got so far are LAME.

    Here's what you have now,

Pentium 2.8 GHz - (NOT BAD, NOT GREAT)

512 DDR1, (NO-NO, get 1Gig DDR2(at least cuz you're a gamer! 2 Gig is better, the more the merrier, you can always use them later for upgrades anyway.)

If your graphics card will allow 1024x768 resolution at 70 refresh rate, it is OK.

The best way to see if your comp will run Quake 3 is to check the game box itself and check the minimum requirements, it is clearly marked on all game boxes at the vendor's store.

The %26quot;goofball%26quot; that told you that integrated graphics is better is a liar or just plain dumb, (you can tell him I said so), because integrated means %26quot;shared%26quot; with the MOBO and CPU.

A dedicated graphics card takes a big load off the CPU and most have graphics memory that is not taken up by the onboard RAM. Tell the %26quot;goofball%26quot; to get a job at the local junk yard selling used computers.

The best thing for you now is get a mid size tower case with power supply included (any late model is fine and cheap).

Upgrade your RAM to 2Gig DDR2 and play Quake 3, but read the minimum requirements first to be sure, (I think you're OK).

How to solve such a great problem of hardware?

Once this computer I am working on was turned off suddenly . I checked everything The VEGA card , the Ram module , The cables of the power supply , the hard desk , The speakers , the keyboard and even the mouse but the broblem still existed .

Please tell me if what I have done is right or wrong ?

I have noticed that the cable of the 12 volt power of the motherboard ( 4 pins) melted and stuck to the motherboard

So I was not able even to change the power supply.

Fancy what I have done ?

I cut off the four wires cable of the stuck melted power of the processor and got a new power supply unit cut its terminal 4 pins also and manually tied and welded the new wires of the new power supply afer removing the old one . I Turned on the power of the computer and started it

Luckily It has become a success and my computer i has been working perfectly since then

What' s your opinion ?How to solve such a great problem of hardware?
It is how I would have solved that problem, but I would have been more concerned as to the cause of the melted components. Excess heat and electronics are rarely a good thing. How to solve such a great problem of hardware?
you should post this on computers and internet category. there are more computer geeks there than on this section.

i dont know much about computers, but i think your computer is overheating. I figured that its a heat issue because your things melted on your motherboard. Therefore the computer has to shut down to save your hard drive from heating up and damaging it. I would get more fans for your computer if i were you. Anyway this is just what im just guessing...How to solve such a great problem of hardware?
I think you should defrag you hard drive before blowing a hole in in the hairy floppy

Swapping PC components such as Graphics or power supply??

Can i just swap the old ones over with newer ones, or do i have to uninstall the old graphics card via the windows or something, if so how do i do that..

Also, can i just change over power supplys when the PC is off, and set up all the cables and then just turn on the PC again??Swapping PC components such as Graphics or power supply??
As far as just swapping old components, some require you to install new drivers for the new devices. But those will be outlined in the instructions.

You also have to make sure the new card will fit properly in your computer. Newer graphic cards can come in 3 different slot connections; PCI-express, AGP and original PCI.

Make sure you get the right one.

As far as the power supply goes, Yes. That is really all you need to do to replace a power supply.

  • Building my own pc for the first time?

i have the sneaking suspicion that dell is trying to rip me off, i have limited pc building knowledge, ive done the following (change power supply, change graphics card, add hard drive, add ram and a few other motherboard cards) i dont know how much more complicated building a computer could be however im looking at building my own pc that consists of

an enclosure that will help ventilate the parts because i dont wanna buy a cooling system

motherboard with 3 pci 2.0 slots

    intel i7 between 2 and 3ghtz

    6gb ram

    750 or better power supply

graphics cards right now im between dual 9800gtx dual 285 or mabye 1 295 depending which is better

regular cd drive, mabye blu ray drive if cheap

    some type of media reader

i built this on dell.com as the xps 730 or something and with the card as a dual 285 it came out to be about $3,000. i dont know if i could get that cheaper. oh and it came with some type of copper cooling peice for the processorBuilding my own pc for the first time?
You could absolutely build it cheaper than the Dell. A note about the i7's, they are smokin' fast but if you wait six months the price will probably drop to about half, same goes for the i7 mainboards.

Build it on TigerDirect or Newegg. I bet you'll find that you'll save $1000 by scratch building it.

How to increase PC power supply output?

Hi. I have 400W PC power supply and i wana to increase his 12V output to 13.8V. Do you know what i need to change in that supply to increase its voltage. The power supply has some mark that says 400ATX-p4.How to increase PC power supply output?
Why are you going to increase the 12V? just because there's a label in the board that says 13.8V? The 13.8V maybe the max, but the 12V should be OK.

PC power supplies have multiple output. If you are going to increase the voltage other than the designed output, current draw will also increase as a result of an additional component added(usually a transistor step-up) that may cause the transformer to overheat and you are going to do another separate regulator and filtering of that particular output... not fun to do.

How to change IBM x-series 346 power supply?

get an identical one off ebay, unplug everything from the computer, open the cover, draw a diagram of where all the wires from the power supply come from and go to, disconnect everything hooked to the powersupply, unscrew it and anything in the way, remove it, put new one in, attach all wires according to your diagram, make sure all cards are seated firmly all plugs are plugged in and plug in your keyboard monitor and mouse, cross your fingers and turn it on. you can always pay the 60-125 after you try. you have nothing to loose, go for it, you can do it. remember, nothing to loose, good luck

Having trouble removing the main power supply wires from my hot tubs control box where they plug into the circ?

I have a hotspring sovereign 2004 hot tub and have to change the main power wiring from the house to the tub as my dog bit in to it. It is 120v circuit. My question is how do i release the wires going to the control box from there slot on the circuit board. Usually i have found a screw to release or something to push in so the wires pop out, but not here, can anyone help?Having trouble removing the main power supply wires from my hot tubs control box where they plug into the circ?
This is hard not looking at it. If these are wires coming from the main panel to the circuit board for the hot tub then they are attached either by lugs with would be a flat screw driver, or a allen wench, or you might see a phillips screw to remove and then the wire slides off. or another option might be a quick connection that the wire snaps into, in which case there would a be a slot to slide in a little flat screw driver to release the wire. the Only other option would be that this is not the main wires that your looking and and that the wires are soldered on the circuit board in which case you do not need to remove them. I hope maybe I helped some.
