How can you prefer a mac over a pc?

PC's are customizable which means you can change parts (ie. motherobard, power supply, ram, hardrive, etc,) unlike a mac.

PC's have many more programs to choose from. ( although I agree that some of those choices are kind of shitty/ worthless/ viruses)

Besides the fact that PC's have viruses and macs don't PC's win at everything.

Don't say macs dont crash because they do.

and if you have a good virus protection then you dont even need to worry about viruses at all. in fact if you are smart when you download things you shouldn't ever get a virus.

What do you think is better and why?How can you prefer a mac over a pc?
I prefer Macs and can type for a long time telling you what I think Macs do better than Windows and what I think Windows does better than Macs. If you prefer Windows, get a PC, but don't try to use the list you give as an excuse or you will be lying to yourself.

PC's are more customizable? The Mac Mini is just a customizable as ultra-compact PCs. MacBooks and MacBook Pros are just as customizable as PC Notebooks. The MacBook Air is just as customizable as PC Netbooks. The iMac is just as customizable as a PC All-in-one. The Mac Pro is just as customizable as PC desktops.

It is true that PCs have more software to choice from, but for any task you want to do, there is software available for the Mac. There is no shortage of software for the Mac, just a lower number to chose from and a significantly lower percentage that is %26quot;shitty/ worthless/ viruses%26quot;, as you say.

Macs do crash, but less often and with less dire consequences. Because Macs are also less than perfect does not make PCs better. A major system crash on a Mac can be fixed in about an hour and a half by doing a FULL system reinstallation - without breaking existing software. A FULL system reinstallation for Windows will require reinstalling drivers and software.

%26quot;If you have good virus protection then you don't even need to worry about viruses at all%26quot;. Interesting argument, but a logical fallacy. An average of 2.4 new Windows viruses are discovered every day. This %26quot;good virus protection%26quot; software would have to be one that is updated the moment each new virus is discovered. Additionally, it would have to written to detect possible virus activity on your computer for code that does is not part of its virus definitions - AND be written to somehow thwart attempts by virus writers who code their new viruses to get around this feature. In other words, this %26quot;good virus protection%26quot; you talk about does not exist. How can you prefer a mac over a pc?

I believe there is concept called %26quot;choice%26quot;. I run Windows just because I prefer it -- others might run OSX but that's their business, not mine.

No need to get butthurt over it.How can you prefer a mac over a pc?
go for Mac!

mac's unique in everything, if you need pc os, then, mac's got bootcamp, other specifications are all good, no virus, stylish too, and the history!

i use the both, but i prefer mac.How can you prefer a mac over a pc?
who said that mac can't be customized? my brother build a mac, its something called hackintosh, it was doing pretty well really, in fact its something like a third of the mac price. and many times better than pc, i really like it %26lt;3How can you prefer a mac over a pc?
Over the years of both using mac and pcs, I would say I still prefer Steve Jobs over Bill Gates. You maybe right about the pc hardware parts being customizable but the mac was built to have the latest technology (which the pc might not even have yet). It's not actually true that macs dont get viruses. In fact, they do, but mostly trojans. Virus and Worm infliction is very rare in a mac.

Besides, if you want the best of both worlds, you can install a Windows OS in a mac through Bootcamp...works like a dual boot system..

take careHow can you prefer a mac over a pc?
On a mac, you will not need to install antivirus/anti-spyware/drivers there will be no registry errors or missing dlls. The updates are smooth and upgrades are easy, I just updated from 10.5 to 10.6 with out a problem. Try upgrading from vista to 7 without problems, or even the service packs. You can not even go from XP to 7 which is amazing. Not only that, alot of drivers, programs and hardware are not compatible with 7. Windows is not backward compatible, which makes no sense at all, at least I know my mac apps will work with an update.

The applications on mac do not require an installer to install it, its just one icon that can be moved easily. On windows, the installer installs files all over the system for every application, causing fragmentation of the hard drive and the possibility for crashes goes up. This also allows bloat ware and malware to be installed without the user knowing it.

The Mac FS is used in such a way that it does not need defraging, Windows you need to defrag every month. You wait for hours for windows to defrag, then you get problems with windows crashing or failing dring the defrag and you end up with data loss.

The %26quot;mac is unpopular there for not many viruses are written for it%26quot; argument is complete BS. With Mac OS 9 back when the mac market share was around 5% there were 500+ viruses for the OS. Today with Mac OS X and a mac market share of 10% you think there would be double the amount of viruses. There are in fact maybe 10 application specific (not OS) trojans for the modern mac.

My biggest problem with windows are all the little 3rd party drivers and programs that need to be downloaded to make windows work. Like adobe, java, image viewers, drivers, archiving tools, iso readers, video codecs, dvd rippers etc. Why does the system not come with these things out of the box? On mac out of the box, I can create, open and edit iso's, dmg's etc. I can open almost every image type from pdf to raw (No adobe needed). I dont have to screw with drivers or codecs.

And why does windows have to have a wizard for the simplest task? Like unzipping a file, it takes like 10 clicks to unarchive a file on windows. On mac, I double click the archive and out pops the folder with my files. How can you prefer a mac over a pc?
I've used a range of computers over the years; and come to prefer Apple.

Apples crash less frequently than Windows.

Housekeeping is easier - backup, install / uninstall, file management, etc. TimeMachine is very effective for backup and restore.

I've never not been able to do something on an Apple because the software wasn't available; I just needed to get an Apple version or equivalent. However, I'm not a big gamer.

Apples work straight out of the box, including linking to wifi and the web.

The only customisation I've ever needed to do has been to add more RAM, or fit a bigger drive. No problem, except on a Mac Mini. Now I get the right spec first time and don't even need to do these upgrades.

I have always had excellent customer service from Apple. Go in with a broken machine, come out with a fixed one. Been given advice on how to get the best from my software - meaning not having to purchase new stuff. In PC/Windows shops I've had a two-week turnaround on repairs - when I'm lucky.

Why do I prefer Mac - because, as Americans might say, I want to spend my time driving it, not with my head under the hood. How can you prefer a mac over a pc?
PC...

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support

Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en%26amp;q=os+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

SECURITY

Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.

Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.

Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

QUALITY/PROBLEMS

Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to %26quot;lower the price%26quot; and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Deleting your Data (Snow Leopard), Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.

With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.

IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

VIRUSES

Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think %26quot;they are safe%26quot;.

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :

Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.

1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.

2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).

3) More business software/games

4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.

5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :

1) FREE (most versions are)

2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)

2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac %26quot;look different%26quot;, if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Why does my computer screen stay blank when I turn the computer on?

After running XP Pro on my desktop computer with no problems for 2-3 years, my computer abruptly froze and slightly garbled the screen. When I rebooted, the computer would hang during the boot-up process (the only way to turn it off was to unplug the power cord) - however, the screen stays blank the entire time. I have tried a new monitor, video card, power supply, CPU, CPU fan, and RAM with no change in symptoms. I even tried resetting the motherboard and built a barebones system, but that didn't fix the problem either. I just replaced the motherboard, and the computer is now booting up and turning off properly with the power button - but the screen is still blank all the time. Oh and there are no beeping sounds whatsoever when I try to turn the computer on. I've basically built a brand new computer (with the exception of my optical, floppy, and hard drives). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of the blank screen? Why does my computer screen stay blank when I turn the computer on?
Once you installed the new hardware, especially the motherboard you would have to do a reinstall of windows, but if you have done all this I am sure that you are aware of that. If the new motherboard won't even display POST or prompt for cmos I would be interested to know what the problem is. Are you using onboard video on the new MB? Not to belittle you, but are you sure the new monitor is powered up? (check the obvious. Is it connected correctlly? I would start with the barebone that has the new MB, use onboard video, and a known good monitor and see if that helps. If you can get something change things once at a time and document the results so you don't repeat things. Good luck! Why does my computer screen stay blank when I turn the computer on?

If you have to Video cards as in one built in and one you added to the system as%26gt; aftermarket. You might need to plug the monitor into the other built in card. Seems your missing the driver file or the driver file has been corupted. Som anitvirus or PC- cleaners will remove unwanted or list as unwanted unused driver files. When your booting up from BIOS trying holding down the F8 key for safemode and go to option Last known working configuration. If not the take your Flash drive or USB flash drive to another computer and download the lastest driver file for your VGA cards then run them as a SATA drive from the beginning of your windows ntuser boot. I hope this works for you I've had the same problems.

I need to change 12 volts into 5V, and 3.3 volts / How does Ohm's law work?

I am trying to build a power supply for one of my older computers in order for it to run in my car. I was told that I could use some an 8 ohm, non-inductive, 20 watt resistor from radioshack to provide 20 watts of power at 5V, from the 12VDC supply from my car.

There's four parts to my question:

1. If I use the 8 OHM resistors in parallel will I get more amps at the same voltage, or will I just get a different voltage?

2. What are the specifics of Ohm's law, and how does it work in converting one voltage to another.

3. What setup would I need to get a 3.3V line?

4. I'm not sure, but I'd suspect that the line coming from a car's cigarette lighter is not always at 12.0 V exactly; is there any cheap way of regulating it to become within, say +/- 0.1V of 12V?

I'm trying to see if this is worth my time, or if I should just go out and buy a DC-DC power converter. I'd really appreciate ANY feedback you'd be willing to provide, even just a tidbit, or just one segment to my question. TYVMI need to change 12 volts into 5V, and 3.3 volts / How does Ohm%26039;s law work?
You will need a regulated DC to DC converter, The voltage in a car varies quite a bit between engine on and engine off, the voltage is about 14V when the alternator is operating. Also a resistor voltage divider is is sensitive to the load current, if the current varies the voltage will vary too and you can't afford to have much variation in the 5 V and 3.3v supplies

EDIT:

An internet search for ;

dc computer power supply

gets a lot of hits, this is the first I looked at. It costs a bit, but would make things easy.

http://www.mini-box.com/M1-ATX-90w-IntelI need to change 12 volts into 5V, and 3.3 volts / How does Ohm%26039;s law work?
1. parallel resistors have the same voltage and different currents.

2. converting a voltage using ohm's law you'd have to put them in series. and use voltage division. be sure to follow kirchoff's laws when you're calculating these electric designs.

3. to get 3.3v from 12 v, you need to use series resistors with that ratio.

4. buy a voltage regulator at radio shack.I need to change 12 volts into 5V, and 3.3 volts / How does Ohm%26039;s law work?
Ok, here's ohms law: Voltage = amps x resistance

amps = volts/resistance, and resistance = volts / amps.

1. When using a parallel circuit, the voltage in each part wil stay the same, but the amperage in each will go down.

remember: in parallel resistors, 1/Rt (resistance total) = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/Rn ...

So if you have 5 V running through a parallel circuit (with each part containing a 10 ohm resistor) the output voltage will still be 5V, but the resistance will go down to 5 ohms; thus the amps go up.

2. when you talk about going from one voltage to another, your talking about a transformer. a transformer is a device that uses series of coils to modify the voltage (and also the amperage). As the voltage goes down, the amps go up and vice versa.

3. Here's a helpful formual for what you're getting at:

V2 = (n2 / n1) x V1 where V2 is the output voltage, V1 is the input voltage, n1 is the number of turns on the coil ( on the side of the input voltage), and n2 is the number of turns on the coil of the output voltage.

what u do is plug in what's given (12 V and 3.3 V) and come up with the rest. the numbers really don't matter, so long as a balanced ratio between turns and voltage is established.

4. I'd guess that you're right about it not being steady, but I'm not sure. cheap method? the only thing I can think of is a surge protector. that wouldn't really regulate it, but it could cut the power if the voltage got too high. there's also a thing (i think) called dip protectors that will cut the power if the voltage is too low. sorry. I hope the rest was helpful.I need to change 12 volts into 5V, and 3.3 volts / How does Ohm%26039;s law work?
Whoa! Don't do it. Ohm's law says that the voltage at the load will vary as the current of the load. Will your computer always draw the same current. No. Another whoa! The input voltage from the car will be about 12 volts when the engine is stopped, but it will be about 13.5 volts or more when running in order to charge the battery. This unregulated supply is not what you want to subject your computer to.

As computers are so expensive, go buy a regulated supply that will keep the output steady regardless of the input. It will also probably have filtering components to keep noise from the car from entering the computer and causing errors. Or you could get a 12vDC to 120vAC converter to supply 120vAC to your indoor computer supply, but that would be more inefficient in a number of ways. (In electronics, this would be known as %26quot;icky.%26quot;)

And now for something entirely different. When Ohm went before his fellow scientific colleagues with a humongous formula for relating resistance, current and voltage, he was literally laughed off the stage as they thought it was wayyyy too simple an explanation. He went home and rethought the problem and discovered he was completely wrong. It was too complicated! His law says the three are simply proportionally related, with no tricks and lines of squiggles on the blackboard. Thank you, Mr. Ohm, for the added effort. Here it is:

E means electromotive force in volts (voltage)

R means resistance in ohms

I means intensity in amps (current)

E x R

________

I

Cover the desired quantity with your finger to get the formula. For example, to get volts, cover E, leaving R devided by I.

To get volts, cover I, leaving E times R..

The hard part is learning to properly apply it.

Late flash: I just noticed you said 5v and 3.3v. Who has a computer that doesn't come equipped with a 120VAC supply? Are you trying to run the motherboard with no supply? If it's an older PC, you can find used power supplies all over the place; they throw them away! And what's with the 3.3V? Usually that is regulated on the motherboard, with only 12V and 5V provided by the power supply. At any rate, you need regulation in an auto environment.

this happened to me, it is the power supply.

you can change the power supply or disconnected the hardwares you're not using such as extra dvd-rom, hard disk.

in my case it was the agp graphic card consuming the power. around 2 min into playing warcraft III the computer restarts. it also happens when i use itunes, about 30% of the time when i play a song or change a song the computer crashes.

i was using geforce 4 Ti4200 on amd athlon xp 2000+My PC been like this for nearly 2 years, it reboots sometimes on me.?

  • Changing electricity and gas supplier?

Hi, I currently have my electricity with scottish power and no gas. Next week I am getting gas central heating fitted and going with british gas and they have installed my gas meter. I have phoned british gas up and they are sending the contract out in the post for me to sign.

My question is will british gas start my gas supply this week and how long will it take them to change my supply from scottish power?Changing electricity and gas supplier?
So it's different gas, but coming through the same pipes?Changing electricity and gas supplier?
British Gas will supply you with gas as soon as the meter is fitted and the gas supply is on. I takes approximately 4-6 weeks from making your contract to change your electrcity supply to them (Just make sure you don't have any money outstanding to ScottishPower as they may object to your transfer until it is paid in full). However, I would not take the offer from British Gas to supply you with Gas and Electricity until you have fully reviewed their competitors prices and current offers. I would definately go for a package that will freeze/cap your prices for a number of years to ensure you will not suffer with any further price increases. You may pay a slightly higher rate, but is definately worth it. You could try www.uswitch.com for starters. They will compare all suppliers prices and give you the best offer around. Good Luck. Just a small word of warning, British Gas, although are a well known company, have always been on Watchdog or in the papers for their poor customer service, and other aspects of the business. They were voted the worst for customer service and billing complaints last year.

(PS. I work for ScottishPower and know my stuff)

My computer losses power during start up. How to solve it?

I am using a pentium 4 pc with 3.0 Ghz Hyper Threading processor 1mb cache, Intel GBF 865 Motherboard, 1 GB Ram and using the Bulit in Video Adapter of my motherboard, i.e. Intel Extreme Graphics with built in 64 mb memory and it uses a buffer memory of 16 mb from my ram. I am using Windows Xp Pro SP3. Whenever i start my PC mostly it gives me 4 beeps and a error message stating that my computer was previously shut down cause of thermal over heating (even though i had shut down my computer properly and there were no over heating problems.) i press f4 key to continue with the start up but halfway through or sometimes after the windows is loaded completely my computer losses power. it just shuts down itself. i then startup up again and same things keeps happening 4 to 10 times then eventually in some luck try it does start up and stays put and works completely fine. but when i shutdown and start again same thing happens... Please help me. And i'm pretty sure that its not a processor over heating problem. i even disabled the hyper threading but no change.... Please tell me if its my power supply or my mother board? My computer losses power during start up. How to solve it?
My guess is the power supply. I used to have a similar problem, and it turned out that my power supply had lost wattage over time and so it was difficult to supply enough power to all the components during startup. Once i got a new PSU everything was fine again. I recommend getting it checked at a local PC-shop.My computer losses power during start up. How to solve it?
try switching the power supply and if that doesn't work put some dielectric grease (thermal paste) on the cpu, b/c it might also be a over heating issueMy computer losses power during start up. How to solve it?
i'd start with the power supply and then if that checkcs out ok then suspect other things, it could be a short it could be in the power supply or the motherboard i'm' guessing also, but honestly you should more than likely take it to a pc repair shop to acheive your true answer

    - You can change the PSU of a dell computer

    - Make sure that the dimensions of the PSU will fit inside the computer. Make sure the PSU will supply enough power to all your components. Get a good quality brand PSU like Antec, Thermaltake, or Corsair. It also has all the necessary plugs for your computer. e.g. sata, 4 pin molex, adequate of power connectors. Make sure that it does not impede airflow.

    - It looks like an ATX form factor case, so just install your new PSU in reverse of how you took out your old PSU.
