How to change the voltage to an applicance?

Hi,

I need to regulate the power supply to an appliance. I have the appliance currently connected to a lamp dimmer and it works very well, but the dimmer gets hot and I'm sure it is not designed for this. There is a %26quot;variable voltage%26quot; device available, but they are very bulky.. Essentiall I'd like to connect this up to a remote - I can then alter the %26quot;speed%26quot; of the appliance from a few feet away.

Any assistance or suggestions as to what I can use or what kit/electronic device I can hook up to make this work.

Instead of a lamp dimmer, try a ceiling fan dimmer. They are rated for motor loads while a lamp dimmer is intended for resistive loads.

You didn't say what appliance, but it is possible you are exceeding the wattage rating of the dimmer. You can purchase higher wattage dimmers, up to 2000 watts. How to change the voltage to an applicance?
use a variable resistor as a switch? You can adjust the current and voltage going to the appliance, unless you are using a relay circuit in the appliance. How to change the voltage to an applicance?
You could run another triac in parallel with the one you got in your dimmer, to increase its power potential. Otherwise get a big honkin' variac and dial in your voltage.
