Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?

K so recently I changed or upgraded 2 items in my desktop PC. one was the motherboard and the other was the power supply.. both of them are second hand or used..

I checked both of them in the shop so there they showed no problem.

Now the problem is that now that i have setup both of them in my pc i get a kind of power surge when i switch it on..

dont know how to better explain this but when i turn the switch on (not the computer power button but on switch from the main power supply socket) the pc turns on for 1 second.. then turns of by itself..

after that i can tun it on normally via the power button on the pc..

what is this caused by.. it could harm my pc in case of fluctuation..

some suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks a lot.Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?

Your PSU is probably too small. Booting up takes the most amount of power.Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?
yes definitely it is harmful

there might be three reasons

1.mother board is not compatible

2.you do not have a u.p.s

3.no earthing in the housePower Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?
Never ever use a SECOND HAND Powersupply or u might turn your whole system into rubbish.Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?
wow... put the power supply in first and THEN the mobo, you should never put more then one thing in at a time unless they're dependant on each other (e.g. a DDR3 mobo with DDR 3 ram).

i had this when i burn't my graphics card to shite, (cord stopped the fan from spinning ;_;). It's a scary experience i know but it's a hardware issue i'm sure of it. if you have another PSU laying around then you can try putting the mobo in first which would be the better option otherwise use the old mobo (if you have one laying around) and install the new PSU.

other then this strip your computer to the bare minimum,

%26quot;Putting in a lower-wattage power supply won't help much - try a higher wattage PSU. It sounds to me like your components were drawing more power than the PSU could handle. What wattage was the working one, and the one which you have in now but doesn't work?%26quot;Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?
I would advise you against buying second hand PSUs and Motherboards. The surge could be caused by a faulty PSU. Better get it checked out and if possible changed... Also are you protected by a UPS or similar? Another point, Is the main connection earthed well ?Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Harmful to PC ... Help Please?
It's not unusual with some motherboards for the front panel power indicator light to come on when the power supply is first switched on. Although it's a false indication that would make it appear that the computer is on, it's usually harmless and won't be repeated unless you switch the power supply off and on again.Power Surge through Computer when switched on??? Get a power strip...APC is the defacto standard. You might want to check the outlet with a plugin tester. It resembles a male plug and it has LEDs on it which, according to which ones light up,will tell you if you outlet is wired correctly. You can also get a cheap multimeter from Radio Shack to check the voltage.Good Luck.
