Most laptops have a Function button on the keyboard to adjust brightness. Try Fn - Up arrow.

Look for the symbol that looks like a Sun and a plus sign.

You can also log into the BIOS and adjust power/brightness settings. This depends on the brand of your laptop. How do you change the brightness on a laptop with Windows XP?

What kind of laptop do you have??

On my laptop, on the function keys, there are pictures of various items. One of them may look like a sun with either an up or down arrow. These change brightness. If you use the FN key, and press the keys mentioned above a few times, you should see an increase in brightness.
